Above all, the hearts of every citizen who loves our city are it''s most precious assets. We all hope that Muroran will be even more attractive to young people in the future and provide an agreeable environment so that the city is always filled with beaming faces. In this era of local autonomy emphasizing "independence and self-sustainability" and "citizens'' participation in city planning". About Muroran Site Search Accesibility Statement | Purpose of this website | Site Map JAPANESE > English Top Page > About Muroran History Contents of this page: The Origin of Muroran Time Line Fact and Figures The Origin of Muroran The origin of Muroran''s name is derived from the Ainu word "Mo Ruerani" that means "the bottom of a little slope". The little slope, in front of the former Senkai Temple in Sakimori-cho, is noted in connection with the name of Muroran. In the late 16th century, the Muroran region came under the administration of the Matsumae Clan. Muroran was developed as a trading post between the Ainu and the Matsumae Clan people. In 1892, the Port of Muroran was opened for the wooden bridge construction at Kaigan-cho (former Tokikaramoi); at the same time, the main road was began construction from Hakodate to Sapporo as the first step of Hokkaido Colonization Plan. With the opening a ship route from Muroran to Mori and railroad extension to Iwamizawa, Muroran s municipality was started on August 1, 1922 as the core of the major land and sea traffic in the pioneer era of Hokkaido. Since then, Muroran has been developing as an important transportation hub and a center of the steel industry. Today, there are large cement factories, steel mills, oil refineries, and shipyards clustered around the port of Muroran. Top of Page Time Line The Edo Period 1593 The Muroran region annexed to the Matsumae Clan. 1796 The British Ship, Providence called at the Etomo Entrance of the harbor of Muroran. Orson, who was one of the sailors of the ship, was died by the accident, was buried in the Daikoku Island near the port. 1854 An American armed cargo vessel called at the Etomo Entrance and its crews surveyed the Muroran bay. The Meiji Period 1869 By the establishment of the prefectural system, Muroran belonged to the Muroran county and came under the control of the Hokkaido Colonization Office. 1872 Founding of the Port of Muroran. 1894 The Port of Muroran designated as a Special Exporting Port. 1900 Muroran designated as a Town and the first town mayor elected. The Taisho Period 1916 Water supply started in Muroran. 1922 Muroran designated as a City. The Showa Period 1936 The Muroran City Emblem created. 1939 Muroran Higher Technical School (present Muroran Institute of Technology) founded by the Government of Japan. 1953 Muroran Aquarium opened. 1963 Muroran Youth Science Building opened 1969 Bunka University for Women, Muroran Junior College opened. 1972 Muroran Citizen''s Charter established. 1976 Affiliation with Shimizu (present Shizuoka) City as a Sister City 1981 Muroran Express Highway opened. 1985 Construction work on Hakucho Bridge started. 1986 International Regular Line for Container Ships between Muroran and Singapore opened 1987 Cape Chikyu (Chikyu Misaki) got No.1 in nation''s popular sightseeing spot ranking. Port of Muroran Site Search Accesibility Statement | Purpose of this website | Site Map JAPANESE > English Top Page > Port of Muroran Port of Muroran Overview Muroran harbor Port of Muroran, located in the eastern part of Volcano Bay and surrounded by the Etomo Peninsula, is an excellent natural harbor. The 16.5 m-deep harbor accommodated boats of even 90,000 tons and serves as a gateway to the sea for 200 years. Today, it serves as the core of commerce and distribution of goods in Hokkaido. The harbor, linked by ferry to three commercial harbors in the main island of Japan, is experiencing increases in cargo and passengers. The present city planning projects fully in corporate the port and the sea. In particular, the "Shukuzu-Etomo Area Land Use Project" which was intended to reach completion at the same time as the Hakucho Bridge provides opportunity and a place for every citizen to enjoy the sea. Today, the city''s industries reach into fields such as the development of clean energy including wind power generations, marketing of local electricity, addressing environment-friendly recycling industries and the development of welfare and nursing devises. Support for small and medium-sized local companies in the Muroran area, which is collaboratively provided by the industrial, academic and government sectors, mainly through the "Muroran Techno Center", as well as the "CRD Center" and the "Satellite Venture Business Laboratory", both of which are run by the Muroran Institute of Technology, receive much attention. Other industries in the city involve the production of quail eggs with the largest output in Hokkaido and dairy products. In Oinaoshi Fishing Port, the "Oinaoshi M-land Project" is under way, with the aim of creating a port where sea farming and lots of friendly exchanges take place. Moreover, there are many spectacular spots you must go and see. Hakucho Bridge - Day and Night The Hakucho Bridge (Hakucho meaning swan) extends over the entrance of the Muroran harbor and is illuminated at night, attracting tourists and citizens. There are many viewpoints you can enjoy different views of the bridge. Etomo Seaside Park & Mitara , Hakucho Bridge Memorial Museum introduces how the great bridge was built and provides you another view of the bridge. Top of Page Mt. Sokuryo and its Scenic spots View of Muroran (from Mt. Sokuryo) Night View of Mt. Sokuryo One of the most spectacular spots you must see is the night view of the Muroran Harbor from Mt. Sokuryo Observatory Deck which is on the summit of Mt. Sokuryo (199.6 m). You can see great panoramic views of Muroran and have a closer look of the 6 TV (antenna) Towers which are illuminated colorfully at night by donations from citizens. Mt. Sokuryo, sokuryo meaning "to survey", was named for a survey point for the main road construction during the 19th century. Top of Page Daikoku Island The Daikoku Island, which is 2.4 ha and 35 m tall, lies 1 mile west of the Etomo Peninsula, the entrance of the Muroran Harbor. In 1838, the island was named for Daikokuten, one of the Seven Deities of Good Fortune (Shichifukujin). There is a grave for the British Ship "Providence" crew who was died in 1796. Once known for its natural black lilies, over picking decreased their population, so now people have been planting new black lilies there for many years. Top of Page Cape Etomo "Etomo" is derived from the Ainu word " Enrumu" that means " a cape." It is located on the edge of the Etomo Peninsula. From the viewpoint of the peninsula, you can see volcanoes such as Mt. Usu, Mt. Showa, and Mt. Yohtei, and the Oshima Peninsula and the Cape Esan. Top of Page Kin-Byobu & Gin-Byobu (Golden Cliff & Silver Cliff) Kin-byobu (Golden Cliff) is a huge reddish brown cliff, which is located near Cape Earth (Chikyu Misaki) and appears gold when the morning sun shines, like a golden paper screen. Byobu means Japanese Paper Screen Gin-Byobu (Silver Cliff) is also a huge cliff, which is located at the south end of the Etomo Peninsula and appears silver before dawn. Top of Page Masuichi Beach Masuichi is derived from the Ainu word "Masui chise" that means "the nest of black-tailed gulls." The beach is located between Mt. Sokuryo and Ginbyobu. The area is a wildlife sanctuary where you can see falcons, bush warblers, cuckoo and more! Many rocks on the seashore remind us of candles, seagulls, lying elephants and so on. You can also see a Mt. Komagatake across the Volcano Bay. Top of Page Chikyu Misaki (Cape Earth) Cape Earth is one of the eminent scenic spots of all Japan. When it is clear, you can view Mt. Komagatake, Cape Esan, and the Shimokita Peninsula from the observation deck. Many people visit there to see the first sunrise of the New Year. Top of Page Tokkarisho Scenic Area Tokkarisho is derived from the Ainu word "tokaru isho" that means "a stone of seal." Many rugged cliffs covered with grass and the serene sea at the Itanki Beach make an exquisite combination. This unique view has been seen on many TV dramas and movies. Top of Page Dolphin and Whale Watching Tours The Volcano Bay is well known as a dolphin and whale watching point. From one of the sightseeing boats, you can see them closely.The boats are available from the end of April to the middle of August. Top of Page Muroran Yakitori town's traditional Yakitori ingredients: Pork, Onion, and Mustard! The most popular food of Muroran is Yakitori, skewered grilled pieces of chicken or pork. There are about 65 Yakitori restaurants (opening in the evening) in Muroran, the highest number of Yakitori restaurants in one city in all Hokkaido. Standard Yakitori's ingredients are grilled chicken and Japanese leek but if you go to Muroran, you will see Torikushi (Chicken Yakitori) and Butakushi (Pork Yakitori) on the menu and all yakitori will be served with Japanese mustard on the side!Hungry? Itanki Beach This beach is well known as one of the few unique types of seashore with "singing sand" which makes a characteristic sound when walked over, indicating an especially clean beach, and is open for swimming in summer. A lot of surfers come from all over Hokkaido to visit there. Mt. Muroran Park This recreational park is at the foot of Mt. Muroran and its altitude is 911 m. There are camping grounds, park golf courses, tennis courts, and an overnight training facility with gymnasium. In wintertime, there are ski areas for beginners and intermediates. Ski area is open from mid December to late March Muroran Aquarium This aquarium has 46 regular and panoramic water tanks, housing about 150 kinds of fishes including salt-water and fresh water fish. Outside of the aquarium, there are seals, penguins, sea lions and more! A northern sea lion entertains people with its popular drawing show. Open from the end of April to the end of October. It is adjacent to Muroran Aquarium and Mitara, Hakucho Bridge Memorial Museum which introduces how the bridge was constructed and has a coffee lounge, park golf course, and observation deck. The southeastern coast of the peninsula faces the Pacific Ocean, and its southwestern coast, which faces the Uchiura Bay, is formed of towering cliffs of about 100 m making a dike of volcano rock resisting the erosion of the sea. The headquarters of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the University of Tennessee are located in the town. It lies in the great valley between the Cumberland Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains. The headwater of the Tennessee River runs through the heart of Knoxville. For over 200 years, Knoxville has been a political, economical, historical, and cultural center in the Southern States. Ambassabear, an approximately 48 inch-wide (132 cm) and 52 inch-tall (122 cm) fiberglass hollow bear statue, was presented to us as a lasting symbol of our friendship from Knoxville in July 2002. His first public appearance in Muroran was at a newly opened park near JR Muroran Station on July 25, 2002 when the Knoxville Mayoral Delegation visited Muroran. Ambassabear, the first bear created for "Bearfoot in the City", an art campaign project that provided local artists with more than 30 fiberglass bear statues to use as 3D canvas and sold them and raise funds and benefit from auctions for local art activities, and appeared in the Dogwood Arts Festival Parade in April 2001 at Knoxville. He was designed by Tommy Strokes and finished by Catherine Freeman and Bernie Hand. His current social appearance is shown at the main lobby in Mitara , the Hakucho Bridge Memorial Museum. Rizhao gets its name from an old saying meaning "it is a place enjoying the first sunshine of dawn". Rizhao is one of the 15 key coastal cities designated by the State. The excellent geographic location, rich natural resources, and improving urban functions provide sustainable development for Rizhao. The friendly relationship started when 3 people from China introduced Rizhao to Muroran. Muroran and Rizhao have conducted many exchanges in arts, education, government, industry, medicine, and trade. As the result of the enduring friendship made between Muroran and Rizhao, Sister City ties were established on July 26, 2002. The missions include collecting and analyzing information about international communication, supporting foreign exchange students and residents, providing various international exchange activities in various fields, and promoting local internationalization activities. We especially desire people who are active both domestically and abroad in various fields such as sports, culture, economy, etc. We are honored when the Muroran Furusato Supporters provide valuable advice and information on how to make Muroran a better place.
