Northport's Marine Services Division is the primary provider of pilotage and tug services within Port Klang. Northport provides both services to it's own clients as well as clients of other operators when required. The primary responsibility of Marine Services Division is the handling of vessels movements within the Port Klang waterways and handles about 70% of all vessels calling at Port Klang. The efficient and safe movement of Vessels is provided by the highly experienced Pilots while utilising the appropriate number and type of tugs for berthing and unberthing activities at the wharfs. Knowledge of the Port Klang waterways and tidal flows is essential in determining the appropriate resources required and the timing for the movement of vessels. The basic services provided covers the movement of vessels inward, outward and also the miscellaneous shifting of vessels which may be required. IT was indeed yet another historic milestone in the progress of Northport when we became among the few ports in the world to receive the largest containership afloat the OOCL Shenzhen. The handling of the giant post panamax ship, with a capacity to carry more than 8,000 TEUs in June, helped to raise the threshold of Northport to serve specific and expanding requirements of the global trade. The handling of the giant vessel not only reflected the technical competency and operational capability of Northport but also served to re-affirm our status as a growing Regional Transhipment Hub, a critical component of which is the availability of the right infrastructure to handle the growing size of mainline vessels. As a firm believer in partnership, Northport has committed itself, deeply and firmly, to serving the changing requirements of the trade. In light of the deployment of bigger vessels by shipping lines keen to achieve economies of scale, we responded positively by developing and providing the necessary ingredient for the growth.
