The Port Academy was established in Durban, South Africa, in 1991 as the in-house training provider for National Ports Authority (NPA). The Port Academy's vision is to become the preferred ETD provider for port training and related activities in sub-Saharan Africa. Consequently the Academy is now able to offer its Education, Training and Development (ETD) services to the wider Port community. The facilities have been designed specifically for providing port ETD services, and these are now being made available to all interested clients. Personnel at the Academy, come from a variety of backgrounds, providing a wealth of experience and expertise in port related activities. In line with international Port Authorities, NPA considers the provision of ETD services through a public Port Training Institute as being of national interest. The Academy has a co-operation agreement with Shipping Transport College in Rotterdam, rendering the acquisition of desired ETD interventions, not yet available locally, easily accessible to all port operators.
