Country site News 2005-03-07 MTA assumes CP Ships agency in Central Asia On the 7th of march it was announced that MTA has assumed the CP Ships agency cover for Lykes, Cast, TMM and Contship in Georgia, Armenia, Azerbajdjan, Kazakstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan & Tajikistan All transport to the Caucausus and Central Asia will be controlled in the Poti, Georgia office and the operation will be managed through MTA Headoffice in Gothenburg. Country site Principals Lykes Lines USA and Mexico Lykes Lines history is dating back to 1899 when the Lykes family bought the three-masted schooner Dr. Lykes in order to ship cattle from USA to Cuba. In the 1920's Lykes operations spread to Europe, Far East and the Mediterranean. 1933 Lykes had a fleet of 67 ships. During WW II Lykes ships were carrying cargo for the US government. After the war Lykes returned to commercial activity and the fleet was replaced. During the 1960's and early 1970's Lykes was famous for their barge/lash ships, however they have since been replaced. Since 1997 Lykes Lines is owned by CP Ships. In 1999 Americana Ships was formed as a joint venture between CP Ships and TMM.
