Jenkins Shipping Company Limited is now recognised as operating one of the leading Paper Handling Terminals in Europe, borne out by the company's steady progress from its inception in 1981. However, the nucleus of the company began back in 1975 when a Belfast based shipping Company set up a sub-office in the newly built Port of Warrenpoint. The Company acted as agents for a local corrugated cases plant which imported Kraft paper reels from Sweden and Finland. The cargo was discharged onto lorry and delivered from ships side directly into the factory, which was situated next to the Port. The vessels would then sail on with the rest of their paper cargoes to other ports in Ireland. Walter Jenkins saw the potential for more cargo to be handled at Warrenpoint and so acquired a new forklift and paper clamp. When a client in Dublin required an urgent consignment of paper for printing the Warrenpoint Company delivered it on the same day the vessel berthed, had it remained on board the customer would not have received it for another 3 days So it was, the paper terminal at Warrenpoint was born. In 1981 the parent company in Belfast announced the closure of its Warrenpoint office, Walter Jenkins set up his own Company and decided to specialise in forestry products. Jenkins Shipping has now developed into one of the major Forest Products Terminals in Europe. A General Stevedoring Licence at the Port of Belfast compliments all of Jenkins Shipping's other activities.
