BMT SeaTech offers a comprehensive consultancy service in the fields of: structural design and analysis structural monitoring hydrodynamics manoeuvring simulation   This service is based upon many years experience of a wide range of problems, gained within the repected research organisations from which BMT was formed. Since the amalgamation and privatisation of these organisations we have added commercial understanding to our technical capability, and now offer an independent, cost-effective source of expertise. Our philosophy is to build long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships with our customers. BMT SeaTech has the following additional benefits: Independent, with no links to any shipyard, equipment supplier, ship owner or classification society. Client list including many leading operators Responsive Cost-effective Please select one of the above sections to view further information on BMT SeaTech's consultancy services. BMT was formed from the amalgamation of two respected research organisations, and since privatisation we have maintained our interest in marine related research, although we now place more emphasis on work which may have a practical application. Recent projects in which we have been involved include: SHIP Use of advanced real-time monitoring equipment to provide information and advice to masters on the structural integrity of their vessel. OPTIMISE Using advanced survey and prediction techniques to optimise structural maintenance. SMACS Monitoring of the detailed structural behaviour of a container vessel, to aid in understanding the limitations of present calculation methods and developing better ones. STAMP A development project to apply some of the work in SHIP and OPTIMISE to a commercial program, linked to the BMT SMART stress monitoring system. SPAN Research into manoeuvring of fast catamarans in shallow water, aimed at developing an intelligent system to assist with navigation. Details of this research were presented in a paper entitled Hydrodynamic Aspects of a Fast Catamaran Operating in Shallow Water at the Hydrodynamics of High Speed Craft - International Conference hosted by the Royal Insitution of Navel Architects in London during November 1999. We also incorporate the results of our research into the development of existing services and products. So for example, hydrodynamic work has contributed to the REMBRANDT manoeuvring simulator, and structural integrity research has led to the development of the SMART-SHORE system for fatigue performance prediction. It is fitted to a wide variety of vessel types including bulk carriers, tankers and container ships. The system integrates any number of strain and other sensors with a Windows-based bridge mounted display of real-time stresses. The Applications: Provides guidance for operational decision making Provides inputs to maintenance, planning and scheduling Provides clearer operating criteria The Benefits: Reductions in front end damages and fatigue cracking Reduced repair and maintenance costs Improved ship scheduling and optimisation of voyage times Most ship types can be accommodated, including: Cruise Liners, Ferries, Bulk and Gas Carriers, Tankers, Container Ships and Warships High quality electronic charts are used with customising and editing available to enable investigation of: Berthing Arrangements, Port Modifications, Dredging requirements, Revised pilotage The software has a number of options available including: Real or fast time simulation Historical or future position display Operation of up to eight tugs simultaneously Stationary vessels Conventional or Joystick Control Pod propulsion systems Collision detection with quays and dolphins Some of the applications for which the software has been used are: Evaluation of ships performance Port evaluation studies Training The minimum hardware requirements are: P2 300mhz with 64Mb RAM (or equivalent) 4Mb Graphics Accelerator Card SVGA Colour Monitor (17" or 20" recommended) Windows '95, '98 or NT Many ships are not operating at their most profitable propulsionconditions, due to difficulties checking the service speed and fuelconsumption. SMART POWER monitors ship and engineperformance in terms of speed, power and fuel consumption and identifies underlying performance trends by automatically correcting data for relevant operational and environmental factors. SMART POWER monitors the effects of increasing hull fouling and hull roughness on current operational performance. Operating under Windows NT4 the PC-based system uses derived signals from individual metering devices identify underlying performance trends relating to fuel consumption, speed-power characteristics and slippage. The Benefits include: Identifying opportunities for optimised hull / propeller cleaning and maintenance Improved budgeting of future fuel costs   BMT SECURE is a system for prediction and real-time monitoring of the dynamic forces on containers and their securing systems. Increases flexibility in planning above deck container distribution Uses the actual weight of each individual container as specified in the loading plan Enables minimum lashing requirements to be determined based on ship and route-specific motions Calculates sea loads based on actual motions obtained with a BMT standard motion sensor Gives a continuous read-out of the loads in every stack, with warnings when allowable limits are exceeded The BMT SeaTech range of Hull Roughness Analysers are accepted as the industry standard instrument for the measurement of hull roughness and offers proven benefits to ship operators, ship-builders, ship repairers and coating manufacturers.   The monitoring and measurement of hull roughness provides a number of benefits including:- A numerical standard of roughness providing a datum for quality control A rational basis for scheduling hull maintenance and cleaning Performance monitoring of coatings and providing a link to fuel efficiency predictions Providing independent, numerical evidence in the event of performance claims Rembrandt Q: When I start Rembrandt, a message appears saying that the Dongle is not connected! A: Check that the Dongle is inserted correctly in the back of the machine and that it is the correct one for the installation you are using (each installation has its own specific Dongle). On some older PCs, it may be possible to insert the Dongle into the serial (COM) port in error, instead of the parallel/printer port; the Dongle must be connected to the parallel port. Q: I have Rembrandt installed on a laptop and it is asking me for the Dongle even though I have checked that it is correctly inserted? A: Due to the power saving features of laptops, some have the printer port turned off. Even if this port is turned on, it may not be configured as a bi-directional port, preventing the Dongle from returning its identity to the software. It is recommended that you check the configuration of the parallel port in the PC's BIOS - the manufacturer's user guide should provide you with information on how to do this. Q: I started another application and the controls in Rembrandt turned into colour bands. A: We recommend that Rembrandt is run in 256 colour mode to increase the performance of the graphics adaptor and allow a flicker free display of the chart. When another application is started this may change the colour settings that Rembrandt is displaying. By minimising and maximising Rembrandt, this corruption of its colours will be fixed. BMT Smart Q: I have adjusted the display properties of my SMART PC and it will no longer start. A: SMART is only designed to work on displays running in 256 colour mode. Please check that you have not selected an alternative colour depth from the Display properties box.
