The Intering anti-heel system uses a continuously running air blower and directional valve to force air into the top of one tank while venting the one on the other side. This rapidly transfers water from one side of the vessel to the other, creating a righting moment, which compensates for heeling forces. This system is available as a stand-alone system and/or in combination with the functionality of continuous cyclical heeling in level ice (Ice-heeling system). Intering systems up to 5,000 tonnes metres per minutes are in operation and can be supplied as either stand alone air blower activated, combined with tank stabilisers, or pump controlled, with dedicated heeling pump or integrated into the ballast system. Rim control system can be combined with the anti-heeling systems that make use of ballest tanks fore and aft in the ship to compensate trim moments automatically or on command of a controller. They can be driven by dedicated trim pumps or can be designed as an integral part of the ballast system. Sea-keeping model tests demonstrate that the Intering Parametric Roll Prevention system can reduce the risk of parametric excitation by shifting the critical wave threshold to such high values that the probability of encounter during the ships service life will be extremely low. A complete ship system typically includes several pairs of U-shaped tanks and pneumatically controlled air valves, plus a control unit with pitch and roll sensors. The controller detects the onset of parametric rolling and uses the damping effect of the tanks fluid’s oscillations, which is controlled by air valves according to the ship motion. This system is effective in preventing parametric roll and also reduces the regularly excited roll motion by up to 20%. We therefore have a lot of experience in cavitation, which can occur and damage both the rudder and propeller. Advanced calculation studies enable us to provide the optimum propulsive efficiency and manoeuvring performance. The directional stability of ships in transit must be considered when designing rudders. Rolls-Royce have developed advanced PC programs (SIMAN) to simulate different manoeuvres such as the IMO criteria (e.g. zig-zag test), using empirical data and actual hull shape we can calculate the hydrodynamic hull forces. This enables us to evaluate different rudder sizes/type to optimise rudder design for each ship. Rolls-Royce offers a range of rudders to meet customer requirements – both with and without flap. Ulstein Hinze conventional rudders The Ulstein Hinze conventional rudder are the result of years of experience in ship design and hydrodynamics. Key characteristics are reliability, excellent manoeuvring and low life cycle cost. Rudders are produced as full spade rudders with 3 different standard profiles to ensure optimal manoeuvring for various vessel types. Ulstein Hinze flap rudders Rolls-Royce has produced and developed flap rudders since 1985. The effect of a flap rudder is determined both by the flap, the link mechanism and the profile, as well as the full and propeller. The range includes the Ulstein Hinze FB, Ulstein Hinze FS and the Ulstein Hinze FM. Tank stabilisers are an attractive complement to fin stabilisers, which need a minimum speed of six or seven knots to become effective. A combined system can reduce the required fin size and improve roll reduction throughout the speed range. Unlike passive tanks, Intering tank stabilisers give immediate and individual reaction to any change in roll motion, giving superior performance and flexibility. They are also effective at low speed or stationary conditions. Rolls-Royce Intering U-shaped tank stabilisers can use water or heavy fluid and can be supplied as stand alone systems. It can also be combined with an antihealing system for increased safety/payload or Brown Brothers find stabilisers for improved roll reduction at any speed. The U-shaped tank stabiliser comprises two tanks, one port and one starboard, linked by a channel across the ship. The system is tuned so that as the vessel rolls, there is more water on the ‘high’ side, creating a righting moment, which reduces the roll. Valves cyclically block the flow of water from tank to tank by controlling the air pressure above the water surface, to optimise the effect. The inevitable free surface effect of stabiliser tanks can be compensated for if they are part of the ships design from the outset. Intering tank stabilisers are optimised to be efficient over a range of loading conditions and when necessary, more than one set of tanks can be fitted. Where tank space is limited, Intering systems can use a corrosion-inhibiting heavy fluid, reducing the space required by more than 30%. The hub/propeller ratio has been optimised for maximum efficiency and the blade bearing arrangement modified to avoid peak pressures. This has resulted in improved stress distribution. Combined with increased pitch, this ensures greater strength and maximum propeller efficiency. The system can be supplied with four or five blades of highly skewed or moderate skew type, conventional or nozzle design. OD box in front of gearbox: Illustration showing type F system with oil distribution box mounted on the forward end of the reduction gearbox. The OD box incorporates the pitch feedback system. There are two types of Kamewa Ulstein CPP systems – type F and type M. Type F : The oil distribution box is mounted on the forward end of the reduction gearbox. Additional intermediate shafts can be arranged between the propeller shaft and the gearbox. Type F requires the mini-mum overall installation space, and is therefore the most favourable solution. Type M : Aseparate shaft carries the oil distribution box, and additional intermediate shafts can be arranged between the propeller shaft and the OD box shaft. The XF5 D is available in NiAl-bronze or stainless steel and is optimised for all types of installation, from no ice to highest ice class, throughout the speed range. Underwater replacement of blades as well as feathering design are optional features. The propeller is delivered with a low noise hydraulic power pack and remote control system. CP propellers manufactured to meet US Navy standards including Grade Ashock MIL-S-901D are available from our Bird-Johnson range. The basic idea behind an azimuth thruster is that the propeller can be rotated 360 degrees around the vertical axis, providing omni-directional thrust. The Ulstein Aquamaster azimuth thrusters by Rolls-Royce therefore offer superior manoeuvrability. The simple and robust construction provides high operational reliability along with easy maintenance, which give best possible total economy. The flexibility in design makes the azimuth thrusters ideal to a wide range of vessels. The low noise and vibration levels further enhance the area of use. The Ulstein Aqumaster thrusters can be delivered for diesel or electric drive. The units are available as open or ducted with fixed or controllable pitch, or with contra-rotating propellers. The azimuthing thrusters are delivered with remote control systems. Key features: Mounting options Bottom well cover type. All components are mounted on the bottom well cover.
