Our continuous work on research and development keeps you ahead of competition. Higher performance at a lower cost Once a product is in service, it is expected to last 25 years or more. During that time, there will be tremendous changes in the technology available. To continuously improve your vessel's performance, we provide a variety of upgrading solutions. For example, advances in propeller design can help older vessels. Replacing old blades with new ones on an existing CP hub can pay dividends in saving fuel. Modules are often developed so that when an old unit is overhauled, a new module is substituted for worn components from the original design. This upgrades the performance of the product as well as restoring it to health. With Rolls-Royce as your service partner, our experienced engineers upgrade old applications or purpose fit new equipment to your vessel. This means that you in many cases can meet changing markets without having to do expensive rebuilds. Therefore customers are moving from buying a product or system with conventional product support, spares and servicing, to buying a capability - a through-life support solution with known costs. In the aerospace sector Rolls-Royce has been working in partnership with its customers for over 35 years, providing this type of support solution for its products, securing over $US8bn of TotalCare contracts in that time. Building on this experience, Rolls-Royce is now bringing this concept into the naval sector. We understand that each customer is different. Our TotalCare packages comprise an integrated menu of services that can be tailored to individual customer requirements. TotalCare delivers what many customers want - not just an item of equipment, an engine or propulsion system, but equipment, a system or platform that is managed and maintained throughout its life to perform to the original design specification, with a guaranteed level of availability for reduced through-life costs. A Rolls-Royce TotalCare package will deliver these important benefits: Improved operational availability, reliability and equipment utilisation Predictable and fixed life-cycle costs Reduced cost of ownership Flexible support matched to operating profile Guaranteed performance and safety Risk transfer to Rolls-Royce Reduced customer investment in support infrastructure Home About Rolls-Royce Media Room Investors Corporate Social Responsibility Careers Education History Centenary Global Suppliers Contact us Search Terms and Conditions Rolls-Royce plc 2004 Rolls-Royce: Services Civil Aerospace Defence Aerospace Marine Energy Services Services Marine Naval marine services Fleet support Our experience TotalCare Fleet support Menu of services Rolls-Royce provides for every aspect of support Supporting the world's fleets The standard of support provided during the lifetime of a platform determines the return you get on your investment. As the Design Authority for the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet, through-life support has been provided for more than 40 years, possibly the longest support project undertaken by a single contractor. We have also supplied and supported all the controllable pitch propellers in US Navy service since 1972. Meeting the twin goals of reducing customer operating costs and maximising availability is our objective. This has lead us to offer new ways of doing business such as offering longterm support contracts and working in partnership with our customers to extend support arrangements and offer fleet-wide support solutions. World famous propulsion product names by Rolls-Royce: Kamewa™ Kamewa Ulstein™ Ulstein Aquamaster™ Bird-Johnson™ At the leading edge of propulsion technology Unlike other propulsor suppliers, Rolls-Royce has its own marine propulsion laboratory in Kristinehamn, Sweden, equipped with two cavitation tunnels. A conventional closed recirculating cavitation tunnel is used for testing propellers in "open water" (i.e. not influenced by the hull) and behind the hull condition. This tunnel offers maximum flexibility for various propeller/ship afterbody tests. One of the few free-surface type tunnels in existence, the second tunnel is used for testing high speed propellers operating in partially or fully submerged conditions, in parallel or oblique flow. Transverse and vertical forces can be measured in addition to thrust and torque, using a six-component dynamometer. In the quest for optimum propulsion efficiency with minimum noise and vibration, Rolls-Royce engineers employ advanced theories and calculation methods. Since the laboratory first opened in 1942, about 1.200 models of sub-, semi-, and supercavitating propellers have been tested. Zamakona. This fine vessel is to the NVC 329 design from Rolls-Royce. Challenge is optimised for pelagic trawling, primarily herring and mackerel, with two separate trawl slipways, two main hydraulic trawl winches rated at 80 tonnes and nine refrigerated seawater tanks totalling 1,500m3. With an eye to potential future flexibility the vessel is also prepared for, but not fitted out for, purse-seining. Safe working conditions, good speed characteristics, reduced fuel consumption and excellent sea keeping were among the owner’s key design requirements. Challenge provides these, having a top speed of about 17.5 knots and a high economic transit speed in the 14-15 knot range. Comfortable accommodation is provided for 18 people and there is also a hospital. Rolls-Royce developed the design to suit the owner’s needs, tank-testing the hull to confirm the calculations, and also supplied the integrated systems and equipment package. A Bergen BVM-12 main engine of 5,300kW provides propulsion, turning a 3.6m diameter propeller, and also drives a 2,000kW shaft generator. When manoeuvring, the high lift rudder and its Tenfjord steering gear is assisted by 558kW bow and stern tunnel thrusters. In addition to the main trawl winches, the Rauma Brattvaag 64 bar hydraulic deck machinery includes 54 tonne top line, and 48 tonne mid line and tail end winches, a pair of 71 tonne net drums and a 4.9 tonne cable winch. This will be the centre of excellence in the North Sea area for servicing and repair of thrusters and propulsion equipment. The 3,000m2 hall is fully equipped with cranes and also incorporates a pit for assembling propeller hubs and blades on shaftlines. It is laid out for a logical flow of work, with equipment entering at one end for cleaning and dismantling, and leaving at the other repaired and tested. Adjacent to the workshop is a quay, and a transporter will move equipment from vessel to workshop. Vessels can berth at the quay for service, or equipment brought in by sea can be offloaded. Since Kamewa Ulstein tunnel thrusters, reduction gearboxes and some types of Ulstein Aquamaster azimuth thrusters are manufactured at the same site, there is ready access to specialised machine tools and the design knowledge base. A separate hall is used to store customers’ spare units, which are regularly checked over. This hall can also be used for overhauling large units, and a lifting capacity of 150 tonnes is available. Seventeen highly skilled service engineers will staff the new service base. Repairs, overhauls, modifications and upgrading can be undertaken, followed by spin testing, function testing and painting. The workshop has ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification. Rolls-Royce has also opened a training centre for service personnel at the same location. It provides both theoretical and practical hands-on training in servicing and overhauling the company’s propulsion products. “This substantial investment enables us to improve our aftermarket support for customers, from polishing and balancing of propeller blades to full overhauls of thrusters. We can also expand our ability to store customers’ spare thrusters for immediate dispatch in the event of units in service being damaged, then repair damaged units to become the new spares, minimising vessel downtime.” says Vice President for Aftermarket, Bjørn R Andersen. Pacelli was built in Norway by Larsnes Mek Verksted for Mullglen Ltd, while Olgarry was built for Noel McGing in the Netherlands. Both are to the newly developed NVC 321 design. “As well as optimal trawling efficiency and high speed with low fuel consumption, we
