By building safe, high-quality ships, SHI has become a top-class shipbuilder as well as a company that contributes to the protection of the environment. It is also taking a leading role in the building of large-sized containers. The growing size of containers, which are used to transport most sea freight around the world, is a key area in the global shipbuilding market. SHI has received 61 orders for 5,000 TEU-class large containers, bringing the company to the forefront of the large container market. It has also received orders for 27 8,100 TEU-class containers and has also successfully designed bodies for 9,000 TEU-class and 12,000 TEU-class containers, leading to worldwide recognition in the field. SHI recently developed the world's first LNG ship with electric propellant, improving overall economic efficiency for owners. It also developed a differentiated LNG ship called the GTT Mark III and received orders for ten such LNG vessels in the world market. With success in the construction of LNG ships, the company is widely recognized for its technological prowess in the area. Any unexpected event or delay can interrupt the entire oil field business. Instead of resorting to experience-based technologies, sea facilities require reliability and proven technology so as to reduce any risks. SHI has constructed 9 FPSOs for world-leading oil companies, outperforming other shipbuilders in both volume and technological advances. Since 1997, SHI has won orders for 7 drill ships out of the total 12 ship orders issued, and has continuously maintained its No. 1 spot in terms of market share. Drill ships are known for their strict requirements and are considered a high value-added business. Therefore, shipbuilders equipped with only leading-edge shipbuilding and drilling technologies are able to gain successive orders. Specializing in energy exploration vessels, SHI also continues to push ahead with efforts to develop new types of craft. 1.0 mil bbls FPSO 1.5mil bbls FPSO 2.0 mil bbls FPSO 550K bbls FSO, LPG FSO Marine Automation Voyage Data Recorder Marine Navigation Digital Home & Building SwitchBoard Quick Link plus(+) www.samsung.com samsungplant www.s-gips.co.kr Home > Products > Cruise & Ferry SHI won orders for three 28,000 ton (GT) class ferry ships from Greek Minoline in 1999 for successful delivery. But with offshore natural gas accounting for 22 percent of the world reserves, and with most offshore reserves buried in deep waters or stranded fields, this has created a need for more advanced development of Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facilities, used to process and store natural gas. Samsung Heavy Industries LNG FPSO is a vessel that is installed at a natural gas deposit field, with a liquefaction plant on deck and cargo containment system in the inner hull. This provides advantages over conventional fixed offshore structures because of greater functionality and lower construction costs. SHI has been researching the LNG FPSO project for several years, and has already implemented a number of critical technologies, including FPSO structural analysis and heat-transfer technology for individual cargo tanks. But more recently, SHI has achieved major breakthroughs in terms of dev-eloping and verifying systems for producing natural gas from the wellhead, as well as for the treatment of liquefied natural gas, along with advances in power generation, cooling and heating systems, cargo containment systems, and mooring systems for maintaining its structure in regular areas. These and other advances from SHI are moving FPSO technology forward, which will help to meet the growing need for natural gas, while also helping to make the world a cleaner place. And while some of our fellow shipbuilders may understandably have their sights set on being No.1 in orders or deliveries, we believe leadership is defined far more by the quality of the vessels we build than the quantity. That s why we re now developing the next generation of 3D CAD engineering tools. Exceeding international quality standards and helping our vendors do the same. Making specialty vessels our specialty. Protecting the environment as well as employee health and safety. Innovating through continuous R&D. And backing it all up with a comprehensive service program that lasts a lifetime. You ll read much more about each of these efforts in the pages that follow. Let me share a little about our background. Samsung Heavy Industries got started back in 1974 with a simple mission : contributing to global economic growth and prosperity by building faster, safer, more versatile, and eco-friendly ships. Located on the island of Geoje just off the south coast of the Korean peninsula, our ultramodern 3.3 million m shipyard today boasts three drydocks supported by an integrated and automated production system that s helping us make good on our commitment to delivering defect-free vessels. Since completing our first drydock in 1979, we ve delivered hundreds of vessels from virtually every ship category to customers worldwide. In recent years, we ve also established ourselves as a global leader in several specialty areas such as drillships, floating production, storage and offloading facilities, LNG carriers, and ultra-large container ships as we ve made a strong debut in the ferry and cruise ship fields. The greater the turnover rate indicates the more sophisticated shipbuilding capacity and production efficiency. In addition, dock turnover rate is the most reliable yardstick for measuring shipyard s technical capacity and production efficiency. The largest dock at SHI s Geoje Shipyard, Dock No.3,is 640m long, 98m wide, and 13m deep. Mostly ultra-large ships are built at dock, which boasts the world s greatest production efficiency by having the yearly dock turnover rate of 10 and the launch of 30 ships per year. The turnover rate of 10 is a very valuable result that has been achieved through the SHI s scientific and fundamental approach to building, such as making large-sized ship blocks, shortening the main engine loading period and efficiently utilizing facility space by using ultra large-sized cranes. Geoje Shipyard is highly praised for overcoming the limits of shipbuilding capacity due to limitations in facilities based on its technological prowess. The First Shipyard Certified by the World's Three Most Recognized International Standards Geoje Shipyard is the first shipyard certified by the world s three highly recognized international standards; ISO 9001(Management Quality), ISO14001(Environment Management), and OHSAS 18001(Safe and Healthy Working Environment Management). Geoje Shipyard, without a single exception, strictly follows the legal and regulatory framework of international standard such as OHSAS 18001, the first international standard for comprehensive management activities, and ISO 14001,an international environmental management system standard. In particular, Geoje Shipyard opened the Safety Personal Experience Center, the first of its kind in the shipyard industry, on July 2003 to provide experience oriented practical safety education. The Safety Personal Experience Center, Covering an area of of 2,300 sq. meters, helps employers prevent possible accidents by letting them personally experience various types of accidents in an environment identical to their occupational environment. Who we are Vision & Mission History Performance Logo Greeting Profile Biography Photo Library Press Releases Photo Library Stock Information Financial Status Overview Capacity Facilities Transportation SHI Ningbo Co.LTD Overseas Network Quick Link plus(+) www.samsung.com samsungplant www.s-gips.co.kr Home > Company > Press Room > Press Releases SHI wins orders for US$ 1 billion for five LNG carriers 2005/05/04 Samsung Heavy Industries recently won orders totaling US$ 1 billion for five LNG carriers, including four carriers (with an option for two ships included) from USbased Chevron Corporation and one from Japan. Each carrier will have a capacity of 155,000 cubic meters. SHI currently claims a No.1 market share in the world in terms of LNG carrier orders received, by winning orders for 9 LNG carriers in 2003, and 19 in 2004. These 5 orders will add up the shipbuilder s outstanding ship orders to 34, which is the largest amount received among global shipbuilders. The carriers ordered from Chevron Corporation are 258 meters in length and 44 meters in width, and are planned for delivery four years from now around July 2009. What is noteworthy is that this was the first official contract for 2005. In addition, the ships are electricitypowered vessels, which means they consume relatively less fuel while laden with comparable loads and voyaging at the same speed as other LNG carriers. In short, LNG carriers are low cost, high efficiency vessels. An electricitypowered LNG carrier uses a nextgeneration technology with its propellers powered by electric energy from engines driven by naturally gasified LNG stored in cargo holds. SHI was the first shipbuilder in the world to build such ships in 2001 in an aim to utilize energy alternatives to oil. Electricitypowered LNG vessels are very safe. In addition, they are as much as 30% more efficient than the existing steam turbinetypes, which use high temperature/high pressure steam, thus saving client companies more than US$ 2 million a year in fuel costs. Another thing that is noteworthy concerning the electricitypowered LNG carriers is that they significantly reduce the amount of carbon oxides compounds being generated while the vessel is voyaging. A highly environmentallyfriendly and economical ship, it is expected to lead the future global LNG carrier market, with orders already rapidly rising recently. SHI has so far received orders for 11 electricitypowered LNG carriers out of a total of 17 orders received across the world, capturing 65% of global market share. The five ships that it received recently were of the same types received at the end of last year. This will boost productivity and reduce costs on the back of reduction in ship design period and continuous ship constructions. Other than the electricitypowered LNG ships, SHI has also completed the development of new LNG carriers, such as PNG and PLNG vessels that carry natural gas by using pressurized cylindrical container. It is currently promoting marketing to get orders from major global oil producers.
