But with offshore natural gas accounting for 22 percent of the world reserves, and with most offshore reserves buried in deep waters or stranded fields, this has created a need for more advanced development of Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facilities, used to process and store natural gas. Samsung Heavy Industries LNG FPSO is a vessel that is installed at a natural gas deposit field, with a liquefaction plant on deck and cargo containment system in the inner hull. This provides advantages over conventional fixed offshore structures because of greater functionality and lower construction costs. SHI has been researching the LNG FPSO project for several years, and has already implemented a number of critical technologies, including FPSO structural analysis and heat-transfer technology for individual cargo tanks. But more recently, SHI has achieved major breakthroughs in terms of dev-eloping and verifying systems for producing natural gas from the wellhead, as well as for the treatment of liquefied natural gas, along with advances in power generation, cooling and heating systems, cargo containment systems, and mooring systems for maintaining its structure in regular areas. The island, housing Daewoo Shipping as well as SHI Shipyard, is the world s second largest shipyard. As the island keeps mild temperature all year around and records modest rainfall, it is one of the best shipyard sites. It is emerging as the cradle of the global shipbuilding industry with Daewoo on the left side and Samsung on the right, as the country sets an ambitious goal of becoming a global shipbuilding powerhouse. SHI Geoje Shipyard builds a wide variety of ships and marine structures, taking the lead in the global shipbuilding industry. About Geoje Island Geoje means of Greatly Bestowing. The island is located off the Korean peninsula in the southeastern coastal section, and is Korea s second largest island (399 square kilometers). Geoje is made up of 10 inhabited and 50 uninhibited small islands. There are scenic cliffs on the hills along the 386.6km-long coast. The island is considered a marine weather zone and records annual temperature of 13.2 C and an average rainfall of about 1.700mm. Swimming beaches are scattered in each district amaintaining water temperatures ranging from 21 C to 23 C, quite suitable for swimming. The farmland area is fairly small, ranging some 77 square kilometer. Despite the relatively small-sized agricultural industry, there are local specialties such as bamboo sprouts and mushrooms. The sea surrounding Geoje is one of the cleanest in the world and abounds with a wide variety of marine flora and fauna. Haegeumgang Haegeumgang is located 116m above the sea level. The 0.1 square kilometer-scale formation of the two islands is full of fantastic rock configurations, stones and cliffs. There are several tourist attractions, including Saja Bawui("The Lion Rock"), the Sipja Donggul("The cross- shaped cave") and a mountaintop called ilweolkwanam, which provides fine views of the sunrise, sunset and moonrise. Haegeumgang is where the cold and warm currents come together. There are various types of sea fishes including black rock fish. Oe Do Island Oe Do Island is covered with a 44,000 pyeong natural camellia forest and over 3000 other plant specimens, including subtropical cactuses, pine trees, coconut palm, Butia capitata (Cocos australis), and sunshine plants. It has an observation platform, a sculpture park, an outdoor concert hall and recreational facilities. It also possesses assets of geological significance, such as the Titanosaur Cave and the Titanosaur Rock, and is surrounded by several fine fishing sites. Birthplace of Former President Kim Young-sam Daegye Village, located in Oepo Ri, Jangmok Myun, Geoje City, is the birthplace of the 14th president of Korea, Kim Young-sam. He was raised here up to the age of 13. This quaint inlet fishing village has 8 hector rice farmland and 13 hector field. It offers peaceful scenery of a fishing village to visitors. Remains of Geoje POW Camp Geoje POW Camp is the largest prisoner of war camp established at the time of the Korean War. The outbreak of the Korean War on June 25th 1950, led to the establishment of a massive POW camp in the districts of Go- hyeun, Suwol, etc. The camp had to accommodate a total of 170,000 P.O.W.s.,consisting of 150,000 North Korean soldiers and 20,000 Chinese soldiers. Approximately 300 of the prisoner were female. Today, only a portion of the camp buildings still remain. The construction of miniature was completed in 2001. The Okpo Great Victory Commemorative Park The Okpo Great Victory Commemorative Park is the place where Admiral Yi Sun-shin won the first victory for Korea during the Japanese invasion in 1592. The 30 meter-tall remem- brance statue and stone pagoda, the Opko-Ru and the victory commemorative park were all built to preserve the sprit of Admiral Yi. Hakdong Pebble Beach Pebbles on the beach have been washed away by the sea for thousands of years and become softer and rounder, shining like black pearls. Walking on black pebbles is good for your health. The warm temperature of the water is maintained at 24 degrees on average. The name `Hakdong` came from the shape of the beach which resembles a flying crane. Yeocha Beach It is a 700 meter-long and 30 meter-wide beach, composed of pearl-like black pebbles. There are extraordinary-shaped rocks and one thousand-old pine trees along the coast. Hammok Beach It is a pebble beach located at the right side of the gateway to Haegeumgang. The 300 meter-long 40 meter-wide beach is facing spreading sea. You can enjoy fishing on the right side of the beach. Myungsa Beach It is a 350 meter-long and 30 meter-wide sand beach. Water is relatively shallow and sand shines like particles of glass. There is an old pine tree forest on theopposite side. Gujora Beach The sand on the Gujora Beach is well-known for its softness. The warm temperature of the water makes Gujora a pleasant place for swimming. You can enjoy scenic marine sightseeing at many spots in Gujora's vicinity, including Yundol Island, Nae island and OeDo island. Wahyun Beach This is a 510 meter-long and 30 meter-wide sand beach. It has shallow water and boasts fine sand. You can enjoy motorboats here. Deokpo Beach The 600 meter-long and 40 meter-wide beach has clean and shallow water. It is made up of both pebbles and sand. Jisim Island The whole island looks like a large forest, entirely covered with a variety of trees, including pine trees and camellias. Near the islands, there are cliffs of various shapes of rocks called the Brother Rock, the Dragon Rock and the Garden Rock.` Known for fresh fish, it is also a famous spot among anglers. Hansan Island Hansan Island is a historical site where Admiral Yi Soon-shin defeated the Japanese. Admiral Lee's Headquarters were located on the island where he held office as the Commander of Naval Forces of Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and Chungcheong Provinces during the Japanese invasion. The island is also known for old red pines and bright red camellia flowers that warmly welcome tourists. The Geoje Natural Recreation Woods are located at the foot of the majestic Mt. Noja. The peaks of the range adorning Mt. Noja rise from between 150 and 565 meters above sea level. The woods offer scenic views of the Hallyeo National Marine Park comprising of beautiful islands. The woods are also equipped with a wide-range of camping facilities. Mt. Nammang Park Located on Mt. Nammang, a small hill 72 meters above sea level, the park is covered with cherry and pine trees, offering great views of the Turtle lighthouse, Hansando Island and Jukdo Island. The park is home to Admiral Lee's statue, which looks out itowards the sea, the site of the Hansan Great Victory. The citizens of Tongyoung raised money for the construction of the statu, which was completed on June 1 1953. Underwater Tunnel This first underwater tunnel in Asia was built in 1932. It is 461 meters-long, 5 meter-wide, and 3.5 meters-high. It took 5 years and 6 months to complete the project, as the flow of water on both sides of the tunnel was blocked and the sea bed was dug up to make a concrete tunnel. You can cross the tunnel only on foot. Written in Chinese chara- cters at both ends of the tunnel is the word 'Yongmundalyang', which means "If you pass the barrier to success in life, you will achieve your goals." Yonghwa Temple Yonghwa temple was built by Eunjeom, a Buddhist priest between 632 and 646 A.D. Later, the temple was destroyed by a tragic fire in the 6th year of the rule of King In-jo of the Chosun Dynasty. It was then restored by Byeokdam,a Buddhist priest at its present site and was renamed Yonghwasa Temple. Yonghwa Temple houses a number of sections, such as the Bogwang Hall, Yonghwa Hall, Jukmuk Shrine, Haewol Pavilion, Tamjin Shrine, Myeongbu Hall, and two temple dormitories among others. The greater the turnover rate indicates the more sophisticated shipbuilding capacity and production efficiency. In addition, dock turnover rate is the most reliable yardstick for measuring shipyard s technical capacity and production efficiency. The largest dock at SHI s Geoje Shipyard, Dock No.3,is 640m long, 98m wide, and 13m deep. Mostly ultra-large ships are built at dock, which boasts the world s greatest production efficiency by having the yearly dock turnover rate of 10 and the launch of 30 ships per year. The turnover rate of 10 is a very valuable result that has been achieved through the SHI s scientific and fundamental approach to building, such as making large-sized ship blocks, shortening the main engine loading period and efficiently utilizing facility space by using ultra large-sized cranes. The regional festival, which was held to celebrate the month of family under the theme Love for the Family, and I Love Geoje, was hosted by comedian Kim Hakdo, and featured Koreas most popular singers across the generation such as Hong Kyungmin, Maya and Jung Sura. More than 35,000 people gathered to enjoy the festival, which lasted from 9 am to 4 pm at the Geoje Shipyard stadium. Starting with a helicopter air show with fivecolor smoke screens, a Children Festival including composition and drawing contests were held. Citizens could also enjoy a variety of experience games such as rodeo, face painting and water balloon throwing, and could take photos with their families at a booth prepared for the citizens. Besides, a singing contest was held in participation of SHI employees and families, followed by Show! Taekwon Performance, and dance stage of a hiphop dance group Expression. Meanwhile, the Loving Service Community consisted of the housewives of company employees held a food market. It was indeed a joyful day for local citizens. Each carrier will have a capacity of 155,000 cubic meters. SHI currently claims a No.1 market share in the world in terms of LNG carrier orders received, by winning orders for 9 LNG carriers in 2003, and 19 in 2004. These 5 orders will add up the shipbuilder s outstanding ship orders to 34, which is the largest amount received among global shipbuilders. The carriers ordered from Chevron Corporation are 258 meters in length and 44 meters in width, and are planned for delivery four years from now around July 2009. What is noteworthy is that this was the first official contract for 2005. In addition, the ships are electricitypowered vessels, which means they consume relatively less fuel while laden with comparable loads and voyaging at the same speed as other LNG carriers. In short, LNG carriers are low cost, high efficiency vessels. An electricitypowered LNG carrier uses a nextgeneration technology with its propellers powered by electric energy from engines driven by naturally gasified LNG stored in cargo holds. SHI was the first shipbuilder in the world to build such ships in 2001 in an aim to utilize energy alternatives to oil. Electricitypowered LNG vessels are very safe. In addition, they are as much as 30% more efficient than the existing steam turbinetypes, which use high temperature/high pressure steam, thus saving client companies more than US$ 2 million a year in fuel costs. Another thing that is noteworthy concerning the electricitypowered LNG carriers is that they significantly reduce the amount of carbon oxides compounds being generated while the vessel is voyaging. A highly environmentallyfriendly and economical ship, it is expected to lead the future global LNG carrier market, with orders already rapidly rising recently. SHI has so far received orders for 11 electricitypowered LNG carriers out of a total of 17 orders received across the world, capturing 65% of global market share. The five ships that it received recently were of the same types received at the end of last year. This will boost productivity and reduce costs on the back of reduction in ship design period and continuous ship constructions. Other than the electricitypowered LNG ships, SHI has also completed the development of new LNG carriers, such as PNG and PLNG vessels that carry natural gas by using pressurized cylindrical container. Over the past two decades, SHI experts have developed various technologies which dramatically minimize vibration and noise, thereby providing passengers with a pleasant and comfortable ride. Our most recent development in this area has been the use of computer software. By conducting various noise analysis tests (i.e., local panel vibration, propulsion shaft vibration, and global noise analysis), we found that the use of NASTRAN in conjunction with several of our own SHI-developed software platforms have consistently created remarkable results. The second part of this function is the development of monitoring systems for the ship's integrity, and machinery condition, etc. To do this, we work alongside experts in mechanics for machinery properties, electronics for hardware and software development, and shipbuilding for ship's properties. The hull condition monitoring system, mean indicated pressure monitoring system, and torque meter are already commercialized as high performance and cost effective products compared to existing products. SHI plans to unveil a ship performance system, comfort monitoring system, and machinery condition monitoring system by the end of the year. We will continue research and development in the aforementioned fields to build vessels for the greatest comfort and best machinery condition for the safest voyages. SHI products enjoy a high level of customer satisfaction because we build ships that are comfortable, safe and reliable. In the area comfort, SHI has successfully developed a number of sophisticated vibration analysis devices which have helped our engineers create ships that are customer-friendly. In each stage of the shipbuilding process, SHI technicians take thorough precautions in an effort to thoroughly minimize vibration. Vibration is measured by a variety of devices, i.e., substructural vibration analysis, machinery vibration analysis, as well as on computer software platforms such as MSC/NASTRAN. During the construction process, vibration levels are diligently recorded and stored in a database. When needed, appropriate countermeasures are installed until vibration levels are considered acceptable. Samsung takes vigorous countermeasures against noise problems through our ships noise control flows. We perform global and HVAC noise analysis using in-house computer applications. We also check actual noise levels in order to take countermeasures if necessary. The results of these measurements are stored in a database so that we can apply them to noise control for new ships. In addition to the development of vibration detection devices, SHI is actively modifying existing ship structures in an effort to reduce vibration. The most successful structural modification has been the creation of a dynamic absorber unit. This unit is specifically designed to combat substructural vibration, and has been used with great success in the production of new ships. Still in development is our dynamic absorber unit which is designed to minimize hull-girder vibration. This innovation has performed remarkably well in sea trial performance tests and we hope to unveil it as soon as all modifications have been made. Another new tool, the active noise control system for duct systems, has proven successful in its trial performance tests, while the active noise control unit for 3-dimensional space is currently undergoing development. In order to provide a safe and comfortable voyage, SHI is currently developing a number of monitoring devices that will provide real-time information regarding the operational status of the components of the ship's core system. Elements of the core System include the hull girders, main engines, and main rotating machinery. For example, the hull stress monitoring system will provide a real-time measurement of the amount of stress inflicted on the hull by wave movement. The main engine performance monitoring system will assess the performance of diesel engines. Similarly, the vibration monitoring system for rotating machinery will analyze the working conditions of machinery by monitoring its vibration. These systems have successfully passed all the performance tests on the ship and will soon be implemented on our new ships. In order to prevent operational problems, SHI is conducting computer simulations so that we may anticipate any systemic problems which may arise. For example, during the construction process of the high altitude Sky Bridge for Malaysia KLCC building, we created a computer simulated wind test. At an early design stage, CFD methods can reduce time consumption and save vast amounts of money. And CFD methods can be also acquired variable data that it is hard to measure by experiment. And this advantage is growing larger as computing power is increase. CFD codes for potential free surface flow as well as for viscous flow computations are developed in SSMB. The vast turbulent modeling is experienced, and in-house codes as well as modeling strategies for commercial programs are constantly improved by validating numerical results on experimental data. Now, SSMB's main objective is the design of the ship hull, estimation of the wave resistance and wake field, and optimization of propellers and appendages arising from daily practice. In the same time, high technology schemes are researched in order to acquire the numerical results that have a high accuracy. So, various numerical simulation such as DNS, LES, DES is studied, and CFD codes is being developed. Wave resistance and wave patterns can be predicted by using potential panel method. It uses Rankine source distributions with linear & nonlinear free surface conditions. Raised panel approach is adopted for the treatment of nonlinear free surface condition. The effects of trim & sinkage can be included. Transom stern is treated based on dry transom assumption. Figure caption : Numerical Simulation of Wave System around a Hull Form The cell-centered finite-volume method is utilized to predict turbulent flow around a hull form. Two-equation k- epsilon turbulence models are implemented such as standard model, RNG-based model, and Realizable model. QUICK and central difference schemes are utilized to discretize the convection and diffusion terms, respectively. Time integration is enabled semi-implicitly, and SIMPLEC method is used to couple velocity and pressure field. CFD can be done to predict viscous resistance and nominal wake distribution in propeller plane. And flow around appendages such as shaft, V/I-strut, bossing, and rudder is analyzed and interaction in each other is researched for the optimum appendage design by using the commercial codes. These testes can be make up for using CFD tool to increase the accuracy of the experiment. Simultaneously, the valuation of the experimental environment in the cavitation tunnel is progressing. We will analyze a turbulent flow by numerical simulations, and then on the base of this technique?we will induce a skin friction reduction of a ship through a flow control within a boundary layer. For LNG carriers or passenger ships, long periods of mooring alongside the quay are unavoidable due to the installation of a large quantity of equipment. Before delivery, a ship can be contaminated by various types of dust and pollutants. A re-docking process is therefore necessary in order to remove these contaminates and barnacles attached to A/F paint coated areas. It is moored offshore, near final users. This FSRU has economic merits compared with conventional land re-gasification treatment plants, which require a large-scale investment. SHI has been conducting research on the LNG-FSRU project for the last several years. Currently it has technologies verifying the motion function of FSRU vessels related to the characteristics of sea states which maintain an optimum BOR with the use of minimum insulation materials by utilizing a MARK III cargo containment system for the cargo hold. It also minimizes sloshing in large LNG tanks to a less standard value, thereby securing a sufficient safety level in the FSRU structural design with a higher standard structural strength in the LNG tank. Also, SHI has highly advanced LNG-FSRU technology that suggests appropriate dimensions according to the individual requirements of the related sea area. Presently the LNG carriers that SHI builds are of 138K and 145K, etc. and are class vessels ordered by the world s major oil companies. SHI's efforts are concentrated on developing various sizes of LNG carriers such as160K, 180K, 200K and 220K. SHI has been conducting increased research of LNG-related technologies with the adoption of an alternative propulsion system for several years. The ISM code has steadily adopted these changes in terms of regulations for safe navigation and for the prevention of environmental pollution. SHI has tried to lead these activities by developing an advanced ship; called the " Digital Samsung Ship ", satisfying all requirements of the ISM code and adopting innovative digitalized marine systems. SHI's experienced experts have also developed most of the essential systems for the Digital Samsung Ship. For safe and cost-effective navigation, the ship includes a multi function display system that integrates several displays on the bridge, and a navigation support system that suggests an optimum route for fuel-economized navigation and for the ship's safe movement by evaluating the motion parameters of roll, pitch, heave, slamming, bending moment and parametric roll etc., according to weather conditions. In addition to these systems, a sound reception system is adopted with the ship's other localization functions which is a unique option to look at collision conditions during heavy fog. For ICMS (Integrated Condition Monitoring System), SHI's activities are focused on the development of a low-cost and multi point monitoring (up to 20,000 points) system. SHI's concept is the PC-based ICMS and the IAS (Integrated Automation System) with diagnosis for unwanted conditions is installed in commercial vessels such as container ships and bulk carriers, etc. For effective reefer monitoring, SHI recently introduced a new reefer monitoring system with PDA (Personnel Data Assistant) for remote management of reefer containers. For systematic ship management, SHI introduced the NMS (Navigation Management System) that has an automatic reporting function to reduce some of the most tedious reporting jobs for officers. The NMS is integrated with PMS (Planned Maintenance System) to become the SMS (Shipboard Management System). The data required in these systems is managed by an on-board database system interfaced with the VDR (Voyage Data Recorder), HSMS (Hull Stress Monitoring System), ICMS, ECDIS, etc., and communicates with the offshore office via satellite. The aforementioned systems have been supplied by SHI and were developed by SHI's engineers to accomplish "systems-integration" and "systematic management" . SHI designed and built the Hibernia oil platform shuttle tankers, which operate in occasional pack ice. Design requirements for the proposed Pechora route, where there would be continuous operation in heavy ice, were much more severe. Ice in the Pechora Sea is mainly first year level ice, with thickness ranging from 1 to 2 m, and midwinter strength of about 500 kPa. In practice, the tanker must also be able to operate in snow covered ice, and be capable of transiting certain ridge and rubble configurations. Furthermore, the tanker must have a verifiable turning ability in the specified ice conditions. These requirements were considered in the overall performance evaluation, but this paper concentrates on the level ice power requirements.
