Hong Leong-Lurssen Shipyard is one of the premier shipyards in Malaysia, specializing in the design, construction and maintenance of custom-made vessels for the defence and law enforcement agencies. Initially set-up as a joint-venture between the Hong Leong Group (Malaysia) and Fr. Lurssen Werft of Germany, a world-renowned leader in fast patrol boat construction, the Shipyard is now owned by Hong Leong Industries Berhad, Permodalan Nasional Berhad and Fr. Lurssen Werft. Today, through an internal restructure, the shipbuilding and ship repair business is entirely spearheaded by Hong Leong-Lurssen Shipyard (1992) Sdn. Bhd. The Shipyard is located on a strategic 13-acre land near the river mouth of River Prai, Butterworth Penang. Besides enjoying good accessibility to vessels plying the Straits of Malacca, the availability of modern syncrolift and transfer system ensures that the necessary docking capabilities are in place for a larger number of these vessels. Since commencement of business in 1970, this modern shipyard has carved out a proven reputation in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry through quality services, superb designs, skilled workmanship and reliable delivery in the building of over 260 vessels as well as providing repairs and maintenance for over 1,800 vessels. The newbuilding numbers are still growing and towards the end of Year 2000, the Shipyard has just rolled out its 265th vessel, a steel hull buoy and aids-to-navigation tender vessel, for the Malaysian Marine Department. To chart new frontiers, the Shipyard has in recent years ventured into the international shipbuilding market, successfully building and refurbishing fast patrol boats for the Royal Cambodian Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard. More are expected to follow suit in years to come.
