The plant produced mainly machinery and ship equipment for the Gdansk and Kr lewiec (K nigsberg) shipyards, which belonged to the same owner. The main products included steam turbines, toothed gears and other industrial equipment. During the Second World War the plant produced torpedo boats and submarines. After the war, Zak ady Mechaniczne ZAMECH was created on the area of the Schihau Plant, with the use of machines which survived the war. The works specialised in production of power turbines, screw propellers with shafts and gears, as well as other large-size equipment. Most of the components were made with the use of own casts. At that time the Works employed over six thousand workers and was one of the largest industrial plants in Poland. It was regularly modernised through purchase of modern machinery and equipment, and had its own construction and technology office, as well as research back-up facilities. In 1990 a joint-venture company was created with the ASEA Brown Boveri concern. The successor of "ZAMECH" - "ELZAM" state-owned enterprise remained the owner of sites, buildings and edifices - jointly 80 hectares and 270 thousand square metres of useable area, a large part of which is leasehold by ABB. After ABB sold the company in Elblag to the ALSTOM concern, in 2001 the company bought the real property it had been occupying. In 1996 "ELZAM" was re-structured into a joint-stock company and participated in the National Investment Funds. After 2001 ELZAM-Holding S.A. worked out and has been gradually implementing the enfranchisement strategy for the remaining real property in the industrial area of companies, the most of which were established by the former employees on the basis of property taken over from ZAMECH. It has been also seeking for and attracting investors in order to develop the remaining sites and halls. The target model of "ELZAM-Holding" S.A. activity consists in limiting the activity to leasing of commercial, service and office areas located on the site at ul. Grunwaldzka 2. It is planned that after the real property on the industrial site has been sold and the organisation has been adapted to the new objectives, the present owners, i.e. National Investment Funds and the State Treasury will sell the company to the shareholders in order to run it in the future.
