The port is sheltered from winds and is ice free throughout the winter. Vessels have to pass the bridges of Sotra (free height 50 m) and/or Askoy (free height 62 m). There is little or no tide. The port is well equipped. Bergen is often called the capital of West-Norway and the town between the seven mountains because of its geographical position. The town has a solid position among transport, commerce, industry and shipping, in addition to a full involvement in the oil and gas operations in the North Sea. Every day, year round the famous Coastal Steamer "Hurtigruten", starts and ends its popular round trips to the North Cape (Kirkenes and the Russian border) in the port of Bergen.
