Ben Line Steamers Ltd first established its own offices in the region in the 1950's in order to manage and develop its liner services between the Far East and Europe. A strong network of offices was established in most of the line's main load ports and today the name remains in all areas but in a different guise. I n the 1980's a strategic decision was taken to start actively seeking outside shipping agencies to complement the in house "core" business activity, which was container liner shipping. A separate company, Ben Line Agencies (BLA) was established in 1987, and the agency business gradually developed into becoming a significant Group activity. However the major watershed in the company's development occurred in 1992 when the Edinburgh based Ben Line withdrew from liner shipping. S hipping agency became the new "core" activity and during the last few years BLA has emerged as one of the fastest growing agency networks in Asia. The company was able to fill the vacuum created by the loss of Ben Line Containers by being appointed agents for a number of substantial liner principals. In addition there has been considerable concentration on developing feeder and smaller "niche" trades which often enhance the services that BLA can provide to the carriers in the main trades. A lthough liner agency has been BLA's main business since its inception one of the fastest growing activities is in the Tramp Agency field. The company can provide round the clock representation in most Far East ports for operators of Bulk Carriers, Tankers and specialized tonnage of all types. In addition to Shipping Agency, BLA has extended its activities to encompass P & I representation, Freight Forwarding/Logistics, Project Cargo handling, Warehousing, Distribution and the provision of Marine Terminal services. B en Line Agencies presently has offices in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. Close ties exist with agency organizations in Korea and Taiwan. The company is therefore able to offer comprehensive coverage of ports in the Far East. BLA is managed exclusively in Asia and the company's Asian based executive directors are closely involved in the day to day business. Full independence was secured from France in 1953 and Cambodia joined the United Nations in 1955. During the conflict in Vietnam, the Cambodian government (led by the former monarch, Norodom Sihanouk) struggled to keep Cambodia neutral, initially severing ties with the USA, South Vietnam and Thailand and looking towards the USSR for assistance in stopping the frequent North Vietnamese incursions. In 1970, Norodom Sihanouk was deposed by his premier, the right-wing Lon Nol, following which large numbers of US and South Vietnamese troops entered Cambodia, to engage North Vietnamese communist forces sheltering there. The end result, however, was massive destruction and the enlargement of the Cambodian Communist Party, the Khmer Rouge. Following a five-year struggle, Communist Khmer Rouge forces, under Pol Pot captured Phnom Penh in 1975 and ordered the evacuation of all cities and towns; it is estimated that well over 1 million displaced people died from execution or enforced hardships - the true figure will never be known. A 1978 Vietnamese invasion, resulting in the capture of Phnom Penh in 1979, drove the Khmer Rouge into the countryside and touched off 13 years of fighting. UN-sponsored elections in 1993, which established co-premiers Prince Norodom Ranariddh and Hun Sen, helped restore some semblance of normalcy, as did the rapid diminishment of the Khmer Rouge in the mid-1990s. A coalition government was formed after national elections in 1998. Hun Sen's party (the Cambodian People's Party) was the official winner of the disputed election (with 64 seats out of 122) and he became the sole premier. Prince Ranariddh became the president of the national assembly. This has brought renewed political stability and the surrender of remaining Khmer Rouge forces, with Pol Pot dying in 1998. Cambodia joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1999.
