SHORTSEA PROMOTION CENTRE FINLAND Shortsea shipping is the waterborne transport of cargo and passengers by sea or inland waterways as part of the logistic transport chain in Europe and the regions connected to Europe. The main aim in shortsea promotion is to support a modal shift from the congested roads in Europe to sea. Shortsea shipping is a sustainable transport link in the door-to-door supply chain. Shortsea Promotion Centre (SPC) Finland supports the promotion of shortsea shipping in Finland by providing information and research services, and by influencing decision-making in collaboration with the stakeholders. The objective of SPC Finland is to be a platform between the European Commission and Finland in shortsea shipping issues, and to disseminate information on European Union plans, objectives, recommendations and legislative activities related to transport. The main task is, considering the special circumstances of Finland, to promote and develop waterborne transport between Finland and other parts of Europe. The Finnish Shortsea Promotion Centre is recognised by the European Commission and the Finnish Short Sea Focal Point. SPC Finland is an active member of the European Shortsea Network, which is formed by national promotion centres. The ESN provides a wide international network, including contact with the European Commission, in all matters concerning shortsea shipping. EUROPEAN SHORTSEA NETWORK - ESN - is a network of national shortsea promotion centres created in December 2000. The members of the network are recognised by the National Focal Points and the European Commission. As of November 2003 these are Belgium (Flanders), Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom. The Polish Promotion Centre is an associated member in the network. Also other Accession countries, such as Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovenia are preparing the establishment of SPC. The European Commission supports practical activities in the network collaboration. European Shortsea Network - ESN - gives an international perspective to the activities of each national centre. The network disseminates European shortsea information including examples of best practice to the target groups. A wide international network is provided for national shortsea actors. Links to SPC websites in Library - European Shortsea Network Information exchange and networking to promote shortsea The principal modes of co-operation are the exchange of information, networking and joint promotion of shortsea. Information exchange is the sharing of information and experiences, but also problem-based and practical questions that the ESN members can provide answers to, e.g. on the basis of existing national databases. Each centre reports on the particular circumstances in their countries as well as on best practices. The network provides information on European Union issues and programmes in maritime transport as well as on funding opportunities. By networking it is possible to have a joint influence on European Union issues and maritime transport programmes. The network acts to find bottlenecks in shortsea shipping and their solutions. The collaborative projects to promote shortsea may be bilateral or multilateral. Joint promotion of shortsea is realised through a European Shortsea Network website, the creation of European publicity material and databases for promotion activities. The joint website is located at www.shortsea.info. The common European website includes also a database on shortsea liner services. European Shortsea Database One of the most important components of the ESN website is the European Shortsea Database. At present, liner service information provided by Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Holland, Ireland, Norway, Spain and Sweden is available. Links have been organised to existing liner information on the internet sites of France and Italy. The other ESN countries' data will be added one by one in the near future. Visit the European Shortsea Database. Meetings of ESN in 2003 ESN held the first meeting of the year 2003 in June in Rome, organized by the Italian SPC. SPC Flanders (Belgium) arranged the other meeting in October in conjunction with the Shortsea 2003 conference in Brugge. SPC - Shortsea Promotion Centre Finland
