Terms and Conditions Charles Taylor Consulting: History You are here: Charles Taylor Consulting | History History Charles Taylor was a coal merchant who lived in the north-east of England in the 19th century. We do not know much more about him, for our early records of his firm were destroyed. His business must have put him into contact with shipowners and by 1884, Charles Taylor was managing a mutual insurance association for shipowners called The Standard P&I Club. During the first half of the 20th century, the business concentrated on managing the affairs of The Standard. From the 1960's onwards, we began to develop and manage other mutuals in the marine, workers' compensation and non-marine fields. The company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1996 and was later renamed Charles Taylor Consulting PLC, or CTC for short. More recently, through either acquisition or organic growth, CTC has expanded into surveying, claims adjusting and general risk consultancy services for the marine, aviation, energy and non-marine industries and their insurers. Terms and Conditions Charles Taylor Consulting: Management Division: Mutuals You are here: Charles Taylor Consulting | Management Division | Mutuals Mutuals CTC companies have been managing mutuals for 120 years and mutual management is one of CTC's core activities. CTC manages two types of mutuals. They are either insurance companies which are fully licensed by the local regulatory authorities, or they are discretionary mutuals where claims are paid at the discretion of the board who are chosen from the mutual's membership. CTC companies manage 12 mutuals and are consultants to one more. We provide a comprehensive service encompassing all the activities involved in creating and running a mutual insurance company. A mutual is a non-profit-making organisation whose members pool risks of a similar nature to achieve long-term and stable protection at cost - a form of insurance with antecedents going back many hundreds of years. Terms and Conditions Charles Taylor Consulting: Management Division: Captives You are here: Charles Taylor Consulting | Management Division | Captives Captives CTC's captive management activities are carried out principally in Bermuda. Captive insurance is a form of self-insurance. A captive enables the insured to achieve a cost advantage through risk retention, usually protected by reinsurance, rather than pay insurance premium in what may be an incorrectly-priced commercial market. A captive also allows risk to be retained in a way which enables the reinsurance markets to be used more efficiently and cost-effectively. A captive may be 'dedicated' and owned by the insured (a true 'captive'), or it may be owned by a third-party such as the captive's manager (a 'rent-a-captive'). Commercial Market Mutual or Self Insurance Profitmaking Cost The idea of a mutual is to provide insurance at cost. Cost is minimised by a strong emphasis on in-house expert claims handling, led by a substantial number of legally-qualified staff, and on loss prevention and risk management, as well as by correctly rating each members. A mutual is able to tailor its insurance to the requirements of its members, generally providing as much cover as it prudently can and allowing its directors a wide discretion to pay claims which do not strictly fall within the policy wording; commercial insurers, on the other hand, tend not to be so accommodating.
