nce wasn't ideal for a venue where consistent success demanded long steaming, but she was a lovely little sea boat & very good for first steps in serious boat ownership. We had some great fishing during the Masala years, particularly with the Cod in winter & the summer Bass. The best specimens we had were 19 1/2lb & 12lb respectively, records we have not beaten while chartering. Lyn was the Cod champion. On the day she had the 19 1/2lb fish, which is probably the larger one in the picture, she lowered the same, mangled bait & promptly hooked a 12 pounder. The 'demon squid head' has been a standing joke ever since, but reusing a stale bait is still not a technique we recommend. In 1989, events that led to the inception of SABRE TOOTH Charters gathered momentum. The financial services industry was making wholesale reundancies &, although still employed, the writing was on the wall for Steve. Coincidentally, Phil was dissatisfied with his job. Both had ambitions to return to Pembrokeshire. We had significant sea going & boat owning experience. We had deep knowledge of boat fishing in two very different areas of the country. Lyn was supportive. We had a one-off opportunity for a radical career change. We seized the chance. Steve negotiated a redundancy settlement with his employers & assets were sold (Masala, a house in Guildford & a flat in Tunbridge Wells). The business formally started in November 1990 with a view to chartering in season 1991. In the event we were delayed until 1992, but this gave us enough time to find the right property & boat. After viewing vessels all over the country, without success, we bought SABRE TOOTH from Hartlepool. She came to Neyland on a transporter; here she is being unloaded in Dale Sailing's yard in August 1991. She drew attention to herself even then by collecting the bunting left over from Neyland carnival around the radome on the way through the town. After a comprehensive refit, a lot of exploratory work & the securing of licences, we were finally ready for action in April 1992. Such was the case on this day when astrong offshore blow precluded our going sharking. The anglers agreed to thealternative of a session on the inshore Bass marks & it was a good job theydid, because the catch included this 11lb Bass for Steve Owens; his, & our, first double. When we started chartering we set out our stall for it, because at less thanhalf the British record, it was (still is) the most vulnerable on the list. This, coupled with our advantages of unexploited wrecks & deep water close inshore made Milford themost likely port in Wales to boat big eels. There remained having the right weather withthe right anglers on the right day & it took nearly four years to get the combinationwe needed. The fish was part of a staggeringly good wrecking session which saw 56 Conger,4 Ling, a 45lb Tope & double figure Pollack brought to the boat. It's a Blue Whiting, a deep water member of the Cod family. Althoughintrinsically common, it's unusual to find them close inshore, in this casearound 20 miles off. We have had another since, but it was no larger than thisone, so it's still the record. That's not going to cause a problem; we'll still be ready in plenty of time for the new season. We're very pleased with our new craft & are sure you will be too. The only other news we have is of the recapture of a shark we tagged in 2003, so congratulations to Sion Tucker of Swansea. The fish was caught in July, by a Spanish fishing vessel, but wasn't reported until January. April We launched successfully on the 11th & have since been through sea trials, licensing & general 'working up'. We even managed a charter - the fishing was indifferent, but the water's still cold & heavilycoloured, so there's nothing to worry about. First fish on board - a Herring; oh well, you can't have everything. We're properly in commission & looking forward to a busy season. May The early part of May was dominated by E winds, never a good direction, & the fishing has consequently been indifferent. It then blew for much of the rest of the month & we had a period of better than a week when we didn't move at all. This has played hell with the flatfish SABRE TOOTH II in Action. We know that SABRE TOOTH II is last year's news & that most readers will have been on board during the year, but we couldn't resist opening this, our 14th annual newsletter with a shot of the boat at speed. Many thanks to Peter Llewellyn who took a series of pictures as we were coming home one evening. As usual, we start the newsletter proper with a month by month summary of events as they unfolded. November-December 2004 Without a boat in the water, you wouldn't expect much fishing news, but plenty's going on elsewhere. Our new vessel was delivered here in early November since when the fit out has proceeded apace. All is on schedule for launch in March. 1 This Page Last Updated 20th February 2006 Boat Crew History Angling Birdwatching Workboat Fish 2006 News Lyn's Recipes 2005 Tagging 2005 Catches Tariff Free Dates Conditions of Hire Lyn's Recipes Newsletters Tagging Fishing Boat Local Services Weather & Safety New for V5.0 Latest Update Site Map Help Brochure 1992 Newsletter 1993 Newsletter 1994 Newsletter 1995 Newsletter 1996 Newsletter 1997 Newsletter 1998 Newsletter 1999 Newsletter 2000 Newsletter 2001 Newsletter 2002 Newsletter 2003 Newsletter 2004 Newsletter 2005 Newsletter Page 1 Pages 2 & 3 Pages 4 & 5 Pages 6 & 7 Page 8 Pembrokeshire angling charters.
