I built the prototype in 3 weeks of weekends and evenings, total less than 100 hours of single-handed work. This is about as much boat as can be built from 3 sheets of plywood, with very little scrap left at the end of the project. I built the prototype from 6mm (1/4") plywood, which produced a robust boat but a bit heavy at 32kg (70lb). It can be built from 3mm (1/8") plywood to about 20kg (45lb) or anything between. Construction is stitch-&-glue, so it is suitable as a first time boatbuilding project. The plans include full size paper patterns showing every plywood component, nested for marking straight onto the plywood sheets. A set of step-by-step instructions is also supplied, including more than 40 colour photos of the entire building process. The Lynnhaven 16 is suitable for exploring your local rivers and lakes, or it can be car-topped across the country for camp cruising waters far away. Pre-cut plywood kits will soon be available from suppliers in various countries. Follow this link to print a material list for this design. You will also find answers to questions about construction in our FAQ pages . This page was updated 21 March 2006 Web design by Dix Design Slade Rowing Shells DUDLEY DIX YACHT DESIGN Vision - Inspired by Passion Rowing Shells, designed by us, built by Slade Rowing Hi-Tech + high performance ~ Ultra modern concept ~ Baked carbon/epoxy construction ~ Strong & stiff ~ Fast & stable ~ Built and sold by Slade Rowing (not available as plans) Ryan Anderson won the 2004 South African Junior Rowing Champs in a Vision Lightweight Single. Congratulations to Ryan for his achievement. Read more further down this page. MENU Home Overview Email Designs Materials Articles Testimonials Bookstore Magazines PRICES Global RSA ORDERS Fax/Mail Credit Card LINKS Boat Sites Communities General TRANSLATE The Vision rowing shells are revolutionary in many respects, in the field of racing shell design and construction. It is a series of rowing shells that started with a lightweight single scull, followed by a heavyweight single. It is planned that the range will expand with time to include a full range of racing shells. Most rowing shells in current production follow similar form to what has traditionally been used for these craft for decades. These traditional shapes were dictated by the limitations on hull shape imposed by wooden construction and have not been updated much with the change to modern hull materials. The Vision rowing shells have been shaped to suit the requirements of performance, taking full advantage of the limitless shaping possibilities offered by composite construction. They are a bold step away from conservative traditionalism, which has been justified by improved performance reported by all who have rowed them. The hull is of a high prismatic form, with maximum waterline length. It has been shaped to maintain this long waterline and minimise variations in fore/aft trim thoughout the rowing cycle, contrary to the behaviour of most other designs against which it will compete. The result is more constant drag characteristics and smoother motion through the water. The construction and styling also take big steps in a new direction. The laminate is baked carbon/epoxy/honeycomb throughout hull and deck, for minimum weight and optimum weight distribution. The integrated sax boards form part of both hull and deck mouldings. These are blended into the deck to give maximum strength through this normally weak area and also give the boat a sleek and very stylish appearance. From this comes an ultra-stiff boat that transmits the power of the oarsman very efficiently and maintains the designed-in hull characteristics that would otherwise be lost through hull deflection. Fair lines and beautiful finish on a Vision Single Scull The overall image is thoroughly modern, with very fine plumb bow and small transom stern. These fair into a shape that is optimised for low drag in the speed range at which it will operate in racing conditions. It is also a very stable shape, which makes it a very easy boat to row. Our aim with this design was to draw a fast shape, give it the stiffness and flotation characteristics to ensure that it would hold that fast shape in use and give it aesthetic appeal not seen before in this field. Combine this with the top quality construction and equipment provided by Slade Rowing, and you have a world class boat that shows the way for others to follow. Cockpit with aluminum tube rigger In November 2002 Slade Rowing introduced a carbon wing rigger option for their sculls. These are also built to our design, to superb quality standards. The prototype has proven to be extremely stiff, giving maximum transfer of energy from the oarsman into the blades, while also saving weight and generating less drag through the air. Cockpit with carbon wing rigger In March 2004, Ryan Anderson won the South African Junior Rowing Championships in the Boys Open Singles division, rowing a Vision Lightweight Single. He took delivery of his new boat 1 month earlier. In the build-up to the championship regatta he also rowed the Buffalo Regatta in East London. In the two events he won 6 of the 7 races in which he competed. The 7th race was Silver Sculls, in which he was the first schoolboy ever to race the event in its 100 year history, yet he achieved a convincing 3rd place finish. Congratulations Ryan, you are going fast and you will go far. This page was updated 10 March 2004 Dixi Dinghy and Argie 10 sailing dinghies DUDLEY DIX YACHT DESIGN Dixi Dinghy & Argie 10 A pair of 3:1 plywood dinghies Dixi Dinghy Argie 10 Two great dinghies, these little boats offer lots of fun for the whole family . Multi-purpose, they can be rowed, motored or sailed and are light enough for one person to lift on and off the family car or yacht. Simple stitch and glue construction , they can be built with the minimum of tools, no previous boatbuilding experience and in very little space. Step-by-step instructions included in plywood plans. Either one can be the ideal quality time project for a youngster with Dad's assistance or Dad with Junior's help. Build as a school project which actually has some use after achieving your passing grade. Practical winter project, build one for fishing on your local pond, as junior's "my boat" or as a tender to your big boat. Built-in flotation compartments and a simple sail plan make them great for learning to sail, whatever your age. Plans by email, on 3.5" disk or hard copy for the Argie 10. Hard copy only for the Dixi Dinghy. Optional full size paper patterns available. MENU Home Overview Email Designs Materials Articles Testimonials Bookstore PRICES ORDERS Fax/Mail Credit Card LINKS Boat Sites Communities General TRANSLATE The Dixi Dinghy can be built in aluminum by those who have the skills. Please specify aluminum in your order to receive this version. Dixi Dinghy - - - - - - - - Argie 10 The first of the two designs, the DIXI DINGHY, was commissioned as a sailing yacht tender for very simple construction in stitch and glue plywood. As a rowing/powered boat, all hull panels can be cut from two sheets of 6mm (1/4") plywood, including forming bouyancy compartments fore and aft. Additional plywood is required to make up the rudder and daggerboard. The rig is free standing, supported at keel and bow thwart and is easily stepped. The mast is in two interlocking pieces and the sail is sleeve luffed and loose footed. All rig parts stow within the hull. As a sailing fun boat she is highly manoeuvreable and nippy with an adult or two children. As a tender she will comfortably carry four adults and gear in calm water. Load capacity will vary with water conditions. Hull section for Dixi Dinghy & Argie 10 After the DIXI DINGHY was featured as a kit boat in a local newspaper, THE ARGUS, I was commissioned to design a larger sister for a series feature in the same newspaper. The resulting design is the ARGIE 10, named after the little boys who sell the newspaper. The ARGIE 10 can be cut as a complete boat from three sheets of 6mm plywood, including bouyancy compartments fore, aft and amidships as well as rudder and daggerboard. Rig principles are identical to those of the smaller sister. The ARGIE 10 is intended primarily to be a family funboat but is also suitable for use as a tender on larger yachts. She has greater load carrying capacity and will comfortably sail two adults or three children or row five adults with gear. Again load carrying capacity will vary with water conditions. Plan shape of Dixi Dinghy. Argie 10 is similar, except for size. Hardcopy plans include fully dimensioned panel cutting diagrams, hull sections, construction details, sail plan, spar details, building instructions and materials list. Construction for both is very simple. It is not even necessary to construct stocks over which to build them and they are turned into whichever position is most convenient for the operation which is in progress at the time. Electronic plans for the Argie 10, supplied by email or on disk, are in web page format and will open in the same way as a web page in Internet Explorer or other web browser, from which it can be printed on your system printer. You can also open the individual graphics files (gif format) in PhotoDraw or most other graphics programs, to print them at the largest size that your printer will handle. Finished hull weights are 22kg (48lb) for the DIXI DINGHY and 29kg (64lb) for the ARGIE 10. If you want a larger dinghy of stitch-and-glue construction, look at the Argie 15 . If you are looking for a more challenging project, see the Challenger 13 lapstrake dinghy. Multi-purpose, she can be rowed, motored or sailed. Traditional lapstrake construction , but built with modern plywood and epoxy materials. More challenging to build than stitch & glue boats, so use her to expand your boatbuilding skills. Built-in flotation compartments and a simple sail plan make her great for learning to sail, whatever your age. MENU Home Overview Email Designs Materials Articles Testimonials Bookstore PRICES ORDERS Fax/Mail Credit Card LINKS Boat Sites Communities General TRANSLATE The Challenger was conceived as a smaller sister to the Explorer, a GRP production boat built by Sentinel Boat in Cape Town, South Africa. From the outset she was to be a plywood lapstrake boat, built to order. Enough boats were ordered to warrant changing over to GRP and, at the same time, she was lengthened to 14ft. Sentinel Boats have also graciously waived the sole rights clause on the design, allowing me to sell plans for her to be built from plywood outside of South Africa. She has more emphasis on performance, with a flat planing underbody to give good speed in stronger conditions.Yet, she maintains the strong family resemblance, with pronounced sheer and lapstrake topsides. The rig is balanced lug, with a jib. This allows short spars which can be stored inside the hull. It also gives a fairly low centre of effort, allowing more sail area to be carried in safety. Her mainsail can also be reefed in stronger conditions. The construction detailing is simple, to keep costs down and to allow those of us who are not master boatbuilders to produce a reasonable boat. Yet she is more complicated to build than stitch and glue boats so she can be used as a step along the way, broadening the building skills en-route to larger and more complicated projects. She has built-in buoyancy compartments in her thwarts for safety. Continuous side seating all round gives comfort for sailing or just messing about with the family. The daggerboard and pivotting rudder give access to shallow water, to get you into those private nooks where the bigger boats cannot go. If the construction method of the Challenger seems a bit daunting to you, look at the Dixi Dinghy, Argie 10 and Argie 15 stitch and glue dinghies. MENU Home Overview Email Designs Materials Articles Testimonials Bookstore PRICES ORDERS Fax/Mail Credit Card LINKS Boat Sites Communities General TRANSLATE The ARGIE 15 was designed to be a versatile family fun boat. Essentially a 3 in 1 dinghy, she can be rowed, sailed or powered by an outboard motor of up to 7,5kw output. She is more than the normal 3 in 1 dinghy in that it was considered from the start that she may be used as a camp cruiser. Most dinghies have no areas long enough for an adult to stretch out full length for sleeping but the ARGIE 15 has 1,9m of clear length, sufficient for most people. The addition of removable slatted floorboards to your boat will lift you out of any water lying in the bottom while sleeping. A canvas or plastic sheet over the boom and tied to eyes along the gunwhales will give protection from the elements. The result is a minimum cruiser for use on protected waters. She has also been designed to make maximum use of the advantages of plywood to give a light and easily managed boat which is well within the capabilities of the average DIY enthusiast. The construction method used is stitch and glue which eliminates most of the framing normally used in boat construction and results in very light structural weight. The weight of a completed hull is approximately 60kg, making her suitable for car topping on extended roof racks. She will, however be more easily handled with a trailer. By normal dinghy standards, the mast is robust and fairly heavy. This is because the sailing rig has been designed to be uncomplicated to set up and easy to control, using a minimum of fittings. The mast tube comes from one extrusion, cut in half so as to fit inside the hull for storage. The whole concept of the ARGIE 15 is simplicity, both in construction and use. For those wanting to customise their boats to suit their own use, there are numerous possibilities. These include floor boards, customised tent, foot straps and extending the side seats right round the hull (these are not covered in the drawings). As drawn, she is about as much boat as can come from six sheets of plywood. The extension of the side seats will need an additional sheet and will limit the sleeping width a bit. However, the extra bouyancy which results will make for easier righting in the event of a capsize and make her more comfortable for sailing. The ARGIE 15 is a good family construction project, with surprisingly good sailing performance and the ability to take a lumpy sea. It has also been built with thicker plywood to produce a robust little boat for small scale commercial fishing or working lobster traps. If the Argie 15 is too large for you, look at the Dixi Dinghy and Argie 10 stitch and glue dinghies. This concept of yacht has always been popular in UK and is becoming more so. The hull is GRP with an inner moulding forming the entire deck and cockpit. Up front there is a moulded anchor locker with lockable flush cover and aft there are a moulded outboard engine well and a removable flush fitting insulated hamper. The volume under the decks is used for stowage lockers and sufficient buoyancy to make her unsinkable. The centreplate casing is moulded integrally with the hull, eliminating the join (and inevitable leaks) normally found in that highly stressed area. Surrounding the casing is a liner moulding which forms a void in which the bilge pump strum box and piping are contained. Hull shape is lapstrake in form and traditional in profile and plan. However, traditional does not necessarily mean slow. The panels have been laid out so as to give a moderate bow for beating ability, with sufficient flare for dryness. Further aft the bottom panels have slight Vee to reduce drag for light air performance and rowing. They have little taper aft of their widest point and have a flat run to give offwind speed. This is most effective broad reaching, when she is powerful, with good speed. The centreplate is 12mm steel, galvanised after manufacture and is raised by a tackle system. The transom hung rudder has a pivoting blade, giving easy beaching. The rig is traditional gunter. The foot has a stiff batten instead of a boom, essentially to keep the sail out to increase projected area for off-wind sailing and doing considerably less damage to unwary heads. Slab reefing allows reduction of sail area to suit heavier conditions. The outboard engine is placed in a well and mounted on a bracket which pivots sidewards instead of the more normal forward tilt. The engine then lies on its side in a well below aft deck level when not in use and can be covered with a lashed fabric cover if desired. When sailing there is no motor visible to upset the traditional lines and it was not necessary to spoil the pretty transom by cutting a big slot for engine leg clearance. The engine cut-out in the bottom has a flush plug to close it off when the engine is stowed, improving efficiency. The Explorer 18 gives safe sailing to the traditionalist, with reasonable performance under most conditions. Those with the nerve to carry the full rig in heavy airs have some exciting sailing while those who are more conservative have the ability to reduce sail as much as they want. Gunkholing on rivers and dams is a pleasure, with a boom tent giving a campsailing option. However, the seaworthy hull shape gives her the ability to go to sea in reasonably rough conditions. She is sold in South Africa by Sentinel Boats ( email them ), who can supply kits for owner completion or complete boats. Their brief was very particular in requiring a little cruiser which was to be traditional workboat in image, with lots of character, shallow draft and good sailing characteristics. She also had to fit inside a 6m (20ft) shipping container for economical transportation to international markets. There are already other designs which fit some or all of those criteria, so part of our job was to draw a boat to satisfy those needs in a different way. I believe that we fulfilled this need and added valauble features as part of the process. The Hull I took the unusual step with this one of drawing the lines on paper then moving them across into the computer lines fairing program for final fairing. I did this because it is easier to assess the aesthetics and proportions of a chine or lapstrake hull on paper than on a computer screen. I felt that I would produce a prettier hull this way. The next step was to move it across into a 3D modelling program, which allowed us to generate accurate full size patterns of all of the skin panels. This, along with full size framing patterns, speeded up the building process of the plug. It produced basic plug surfaces that were relatively quick to bring to production plug standard. She has a plumb bow and long waterline, to maximise top-end performance. The bow is fine down at waterline to allow her to punch through a wind chop, for good windward ability. This flares to a full plan shape at deck level, giving reserve buoyancy to resist bow burying and to keep her dry on deck. Aft she is quite full on plan, with straight buttocks. This powerful stern gives her good reaching speed and the volume distribution to carry reasonable crew loads in the cockpit. She has a long and shallow keel moulded in, which runs from the leading edge of the centre plate through to the outboard engine well. A rudder horn is bolted to the heel of the keel to give protection to the semi-balanced spade rudder, which is hung off the transom on pintles. Section through GRP version On Deck Her deck layout has been drawn clean and simple, keeping the best spots available for the crew rather than occupying them with deck hardware and ropes. She has a raised sheer and flush deck, maximising usable space both on deck and down below. The sunken self-draining foredeck acts as an oversize anchor well and also provides a comfortable spot to sit, both sailing and at anchor. She has a handrail/toerail detail along the deck edge, to give safer footing on deck and useful tie-on points for fenders etc. Her cockpit is deep, giving good protection behind the cabin from wind and spray. The seats have comfortable backrests and the coamings are wide enough to sit on. The outboard engine well is in the cockpit footwell, with a dam formed around it to contain accidental fuel or oil spillage which may otherwise make the sole area slippery. Drainage in the event of taking a large wave onboard will be very fast, via the engine well. Halliards and headsail furling lines are led alongside the companion hatch and through stoppers to a pair of 6:1 winches on the aft end of the cabintop. Headsail sheets are led through pivoting fairleads with built-in camcleats to the same pair of winches or directly to the crew for hand control from whichever position suits them. Mainsheet blocks are mounted on the top of the transom and reefing lines have been kept on the boom. She can be reefed by one person standing in the companionway, from where all lines can be reached. Centreplate and Ballast Her centreplate, of approximately 100kg, is raised by means of a simple drum winch housed under the companionway step. Fixed ballast is lead, glassed over to form the cabin sole. Powerful Gaff or Marconi Rig The gaff mast is the same length as the hull, so that it also fits easily into the shipping container while lashed to the deck. The marconi mast is built in two sections that can be separated for shipping inside the container. The joint is made with an internal sleeve and machine screws and is standard mast detailing. Both rigs use a deck-stepped mast in a tall tabernacle and the boom is hinged off the tabernacle rather than the mast. This simplifies lowering the mast underway without first unshipping the boom.
