How do you thank so many people? According to VolunteerCoordinators Gail Demcsak and Diane Gorman, "Awesome only begins to describe the enormous response and follow through of all the volunteers for theAnnapolis Salute of the 2006 VOR. From our standpoint the party was antremendous success, beginning with preparations, right through locking the door when the last of us left the building. Everyone worked very hard to make it all come together. Job well done EYC, SSA and friends! "For the record, we had 320 assigned volunteers from with practically no cancellations, 30 more of Clare's Posse who organized the event, and there were at least 50 last minute volunteers, many of whom just found a need and filled it. "We would also like to thank Clare Vanderbeek for having the vision to organize an event of this magnitude and for giving us the opportunity to work with a truly awesome group of people... a good time was had by all." Also for the record, more than 6,000 friends and neighbors came through the gates Friday night, and reportedly purchased some $70,000 worth of drink tickets. Whew. Break out the champagne! Our new marina officially opened on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. ! The fire marshall gave his full approval Tuesday morning....After a final walk through with contractors Jack Feick and John Norris at 5 p.m., Marina Committee members cut the rope across the entrance to the marina along with a big BANG and raise the flag on the outside flag pole signaling to all that the marina is open... Congratulations to the Marina Committee for the successful completion of a long and complicated process. Your efforts are appreciated! A reminder for those who are storing their boats in the yard on trailers that the yard will not be open until Monday, May 8 , after all the VOR party events are finished and cleaned up. Also, you may have noticed we have built new dinghy racks and that you must have a dinghy rack storage contract on file ($160/year) to store a small boat on EYC property. We are also issuing stickers for your small boats so we can better track whose boats are in the racks....currently we have placed all the kayaks, canoes and dinghies on the Erkman lawn so we can sort through them and place those with storage contracts in the new racks. We currently have more dinghies/kayaks than contracts on file so if you own one of these, please come and get it or turn in a storage contract (also available by e-mail by contacting the EYC office or Marina Committee at marina@eastportyc.org ). EYC to Go Smoke-Free Going Smoke-free at EYC has been an issue the club’s Board of Directors has examined for some time now. Two separate member surveys have shown that the vast majority of our members support a Smoke Free Environment at the Club. The House Committee asked that House Rule VII, Section E be amended to eliminate the use of tobacco products within the bar. This item was placed on the agenda for the March 21, 2006 Executive Board Meeting. The agenda was published on the Notice Board of the Clubhouse and on the Club’s Web Site. Three members attended the meeting and spoke in support of the House Committee resolution. The Executive Board considered several options open to it including: Continue the present policy to allow smoking; Eliminating smoking in the bar Eliminating Smoking in the Clubhouse and adjoining decks; Allowing Smoking on all lower decks; Permitting Smoking on all decks but restricting its use to certain areas. After considering the options available to it and the research that has conclusively shown the ill effects of secondary exposure to tobacco smoke, the Board voted to change the official policy of the club by adopting the following resolution: Effective June 1, 2006, use of any tobacco products is not permitted in the clubhouse and adjoining decks at anytime. The Executive Board revisited this issue at its meeting of April 18 and amended its previous action by voting to allow the use of tobacco products on the main rear deck at all times. Therefore, Effective June 1, 2006, the use of any tobacco product in the interior of the Clubhouse of the Eastport Yacht Club will be prohibited. See Commodore's comments, CLICK HERE . The Stars are coming, for the 2006 Championship of the Western Hemisphere The Star is the Olympic Class Keel boat that is sailed by several EYC members (including past commodore Bud Elsaesser). The Championship of the Western Hemisphere will be held May 20 - 27 of this year right here in Annapolis. Yes, that is also Naval Academy Commissioning Week , which will make for a busy week. AYC will be providing race committee for this event and members from SSA and EYC are working on the regatta committee. The Star is sailed by a crew of two, usually very large people, and while most crews are male, there are several very good female Star sailors around the world, including some locally. Here is the challenge: with the regatta coinciding with Commissioning Week there is a desperate need for housing for the visiting sailors who have been invited from as far South as Brazil, up to Canada, and in between. Sixty teams of two people are expected to compete, and this international group always enjoys the warm welcome Annapolis is known for providing, although USNA was unable to reschedule its graduation to accommodate this regatta. If you would be willing to host a crew at your residence please contact Bud Elsaesser by calling 410-544-9781 or e-mailing budelsaesser@cablespeed.com . Acura Miami Race Week 2006 This Sunday, you can watch top sailors compete at Acura Miami Race Week 2006 on an OLN special produced and narrated by Gary Jobson, The program airs at 4:30 PM ET with an encore showing on Monday May 15 3:00 PM ET.
