EYC is located at Sycamore Point, across the river from the Naval Academy. There is no transient dockage available, but there is a dinghy dock. Anchoring off EYC is permitted, but captains unfamiliar with the harbor should beware of a shallow "bump" just off the entrance to the EYC marina. Docking on the EYC bulkhead is not advised as it is quite shallow against the bulkhead and the area is subject to wakes from boat traffic and a considerable surge in certain wind conditions. The EYC clubhouse is painted a distinctive yellow with a green roof. The club does NOT monitor the VHF radio. Scuttlebutt is another way we have to share the good news and the bad news of our EYC family. *Scuttlebutt - The cask of drinking water on ships was called a scuttlebutt and since Sailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink of water, scuttlebutt became U.S. Navy slang for gossip or rumors. A butt was a wooden cask which held water or other liquids; to scuttle is to drill a hole, as for tapping a cask. Sandy Grosvenor Receives US SAILING C.R.E.W. Award US SAILING President Janet Baxter (left) presented Sandy Grosvenor with the CREW Award Phoenix, Ariz. (October 20, 2005) — Long-time US SAILING volunteer Sandy Grosvenor (Annapolis, Md.) was presented with US SAILING's C.R.E.W. Award today, an honor she has earned for some time. Grosvenor was presented with the award on Thursday-morning during US SAILING's Board of Directors meeting at the organization's Annual General Meeting in Phoenix , Ariz. The C.R.E.W. award recognizes US SAILING volunteers and staff who effectively set clear expectations, show mutual respect, and are committed to collaboration within the organization. Grosvenor was not informed of the award presentation ahead of time, so it was a pleasant surprise for her. Grosvenor was born with a tiller in her hand. While she has earned her share of trophies on the race course, she has also been giving back to the sport since an early age. You will find her as frequently running races as competing in them. She's an International Judge, an Umpire, and a Race Management Instructor. She's the only person who can boast having been both a competitor and the Principal Race Officer at the International Women's Keelboat Championship. "She has gone above and beyond the expectation of a volunteer for the organization," commented one of her many nominators. "She created and implemented the Sailing Officials Automated Reporting System (SOARS). She is dedicated and committed to the sport. During a recent event she not only participated as a Judge, but went out of her way to assist with computer issues and help with the scoring system." Beyond her strong interpersonal skills and dedication to the sport we all love, Grosvenor received the CREW award because of her demonstrated integrity and respect for others. "She gives tirelessly, working long hours to make things perfect and provide exceptional service. She knows her stuff at the highest level," as another nominator put it. The C.R.E.W. award, first presented in the spring of 2002, is now a regular part of US SAILING spring and general meetings. It's based on the C.R.E.W. Member Agreement, which establishes the values by which staff and volunteers strive to work together: C stands for Commitment to exceptional service. R is for Respecting fellow CREW members. E stands for Expecting Excellence as a standard. W is for Working together in a responsible consistent fashion. *** Congratualtions, Sandy! EYC Invades Canada! Nicole, bartender at the Shelburne Harbor Yacht Club, Nova Scotia, hangs the EYC burgee in a place of honor, over the door to the deck, where the Thursday night races are finishing. Nicole and Sue, the club manager, made sure that the EYC invaders aboard Bay Wolf, Alex Zahl's Bavaria 47, were well prepared for their triumphant return to the States the next day after a week-long excursion to Halifax, West Dover, Chester (Mahone Bay), and Lunenburg. Other ports of call on the 4-week cruise included Nantucket, Bar Harbor, Newport, Block Island, Point Pleasant, NJ, and Cape May. Coming home on the 'inside' route, the perils of Hell Gate and New York City were deftly dealt with. Crew accompanying Alex, at one time or another, included EYC members Roger French, Joe & Betsy Ruzzi, and Jon Pope along with Lori Marino, Dave Speers, Cathy Cronin, Neil Feldsher, Jane Abitanta, David Paul , John Lyons, Kelly Lyons, and Gordy Wright. EYC :: From the Manager From the Manager Home Page About EYC News Juniors Cruising Bermuda Ocean Race Racing Photos EYC Foundation Contacts Member Login Manager New General Manager Hired The EYC Board of Directors is pleased to announce our new general manager, Bill Kocan . A native of the Annapolis area, Bill is a talented and accomplished professional with a comprehensive background in food and beverage management, marketing and financial controls. For more than 12 years he has been General Manager of the Rams Head Tavern and later served as District Manager of Rams Head's multiple food and entertainment operations. Most recently, Bill served as House Manager at Annapolis Yacht Club for nearly four years. He is an active member of the Club Managers Association of America . Exploratory discussions between Bill and key members of the Board of Directors were just recently brought to fruition and the club's leadership is delighted to have a manager of Bill's caliber come aboard. "Eastport Yacht Club will be faced with far greater challenges, both fiscal and physical, as we move into the future," said Commodore Rick Brown. "As such, we looked for an individual who possessed the financial and culinary skills needed to operate a first rate bar and tavern but who had also proven himself as a successful Club Manager with the ability to work with the many diverse groups who belong to our community. We believe that we have found such an individual right in our own back yard. That person is Bill Kocan." In his new role as General Manager, Bill will be responsible for four major areas: the multiple facets of daily club operations; the oversight of the physical property and the human resources of the club; the profitability and overall quality of our beverage and food service; and the preservation and nurturing of EYC's club culture through our traditions, history and vision. Due to Bill's prior professional obligations, he will join us April 1 . Until then, we hope you will continue to be patient during this transition. EYC :: Cruising Cruising Home Page About EYC News Juniors Cruising Bermuda Ocean Race Racing Photos EYC Foundation Contacts Member Login Cruising 2006 Cruising Schedule EYC Cruising News Rob Greve and Bob Arias On Monday, February 20, we had a very successful cruise planning meeting. You can see the results posted around the club, as well as linked from the EYC web home page (thanks, Marty). Bob has also sent the results to everyone on the cruisers’ email list. It looks like a pretty full schedule, with three (that’s 3!) long cruisers, as well as weekends and long weekends. We’re even going to try some day cruises. Pete and Jane volunteered to host the famous Gourmet Cruise, and the other favorities like the Wye picnic and the Goose Cruise are well in place. As in the past, some changes will be made over the year, but we’ll try to keep the web version up to date! You’ll note that there are some events still need coordinators, so please let Rob or Bob know if you can help. By the time you read this, the annual pot luck dinner is history. We hope your waist line has recovered. The first on-water event will be the “Ice Breaker” cruise to the Magothy on April 29-30. We’ve scheduled this to coincide with the VOR in-port race happening on April 29 just off the Magothy, north of the Bay Bridge ; it seems to be that’s the only place wide and deep enough in Chesapeake for these boats to have a “round-the-bouys” race. (As of this writing, the six VOR boats are in dull, boring Rio de Janeiro, just waiting for the restart to wild, exciting Baltimore.) Speaking of racing, the annual Leukemia Cup regatta is Saturday, June 17. There’s a cruiser class, and some of us are planning to enter. Here’s your chance to invite some additional crew, have some low-key fun without commiting to a race schedule, attend parties at AYC (!) and EYC, and raise money for a good cause. See http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/regatta/hm_reg for more information. Remember, every Thursday is “cruisers’ night” at the club. Just look for the long table, and join us for dinner. Don’t be shy (we’re not!). Once the season begins, this is an excellent way to set up impromptu weekend raft-ups, get extra crew, or get yourself invited onto someone else’s boat.
