BYC Webmaster Bellingham Yacht Club » About BYC & History Home | Email Webmaster Bellingham Yacht Club About BYC & History Mission of the Bellingham Yacht Club The mission of the Bellingham Yacht Club is to foster recreational boating activities in Bellingham and vicinity by providing a support organization, a clubhouse, and other facilities and equipment, and to serve the social needs of its members to the extent possible while managing the Club’s assets in a fiscally responsible manner. History of the Bellingham Yacht Club The Beginnings: On February 14, 1925, a small group of avid boaters met at Garland’s boathouse on the South Side and created the Bellingham Yacht Club. Dr. Carl Erb served at first BYC Commodore; W. J. Seaman was Vice Commodore; and J. L. Patton was Secretary-Treasurer. The club burgee was designed by F. Stanley Piper. Three weeks later the Club had a membership of fifty and a fleet of ten boats. Members of Sea Scout I under the master H. L. Morse with their ship Sea Wolf were made junior members of the new Yacht Club. Pacific-American Fisheries allowed the new group to use its shipyard ways and a portion of the office building temporarily while the club began negotiations with the Whatcom County Port Commission to obtain permanent moorage on Bellingham Bay. By July of 1925 there were eighty members and the club had become affiliated with the Pacific International Yachting Association (PIYA). During 1926 and 1927 weekend cruises, sailing races, and power boat races were conducted with some fifteen boats taking part. Move to Chuckanut Bay: In 1928 negotiations were completed for summer moorage space at Camp Perfection on Chuckanut Bay. Members worked weekends and evenings to build a 135-foot dock and a locker shed which was later replaced with the first clubhouse. The third annual banquet was held on October 27, 1928 at Chuckanut Shell. Some of the BYC boats took part in the PIYA regattas during the first five years. In 1929, one predicted log race from Chuckanut to Vancouver was won by Tom Nash. During return from Vancouver, Tom - for reasons unknown - was fired upon by a Canadian fishing boat and received shotgun pellets in his back, neck, and head. Fortunately, the attack was not fatal. In 1931, BYC hosted the PIYA regatta. Boats from Vancouver, Victoria, Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, and Bremerton attended. BYC was again the host in 1935. The War Years and Beyond: The period from 1940 to 1946 saw a temporary decline in the club due to wartime restrictions, shortages of material and manpower, and lack of adequate moorage space. In 1946 BYC became active again and acquired a building at the foot of Cornwall Avenue on the waterfront. The building had originally been used as the Bloedel-Donovan commissary then, during World War II, as a Coast Guard headquarters. The old Chuckanut Bay BYC clubhouse - minus the fireplace but including the lighthouse tower - was brought by barge to Cornwall where it was joined to the existing building and the interior was rebuilt. When the new facility was opened on December 20, 1946 it boasted a dining room, cocktail lounge, wardroom, kitchen, lobby, office, and a storage room. Just below the building was moorage for about 20 boats. In the late Forties, the BYC ladies decided they should have a more active role in club affairs than simply being deck hands and galley slaves. In January 1949, with Marge Okerland as the first president, they formed the BYC First Mates auxiliary to assist with regatta preparations. The First Mates soon became indispensable in club planning, decorating for special events, and sponsorship of style shows, and an annual Children’s Christmas Party. Growth of BYC: During 1950, the deck on the water side of the Cornwall building was partly enclosed to form a ballroom and a sun deck was added. By that time the club had mushroomed to 317 boating members, 580 social members, a staff of 20 employees, and a fleet of 71 power boats, plus 25 sailing boats. At that time there were also 30 members of the active juniors group. The Port of Bellingham now began development of Squalicum Harbor to the north and a place was reserved for the Bellingham Yacht Club. Fred Haskell was instrumental in getting the Port to build the original structure that is now the BYC clubhouse. At the recommendation of the State Auditor, the BYC members purchased the building from the Port. At that time it was necessary to raise the BYC dues from $10 to $25. Stock shares were made available to members. The move of BYC from Cornwall to the present location at Squalicum Harbor was made in 1965. No suitable use for the abandoned clubhouse at the Cornwall site could be found so the building was sold. It still exists, however, and is in use. The building, with the tower, was barged to LaConner where it became the Lighthouse Inn restaurant. After the move to Squalicum Harbor, membership continued to grow rapidly. More space than the original building was soon needed. A large addition to the lounge and dining area was completed in 1970. It provided space for up to 200 diners and included the present two-level dance floor. The building was expanded again in 1986. Commodore Bud Peterson led a campaign to substantially remodel the facility. New carpets, furnishings, and particularly, new, enlarged main floor rest rooms and an outside deck were added to the Club in an undertaking costing about $225,000 to be financed through ten-year self-amortizing bonds. Recent Years: The PITCH (Pacific International Ton Championships) regatta was initiated in 1974. It was an immediate success - hailed as one of the finest IOR competitions - with boats coming to Bellingham Bay from California to British Columbia. During the early 1980’s, the PITCH regatta was modified to include nine handicapped divisions. PITCH has maintained its reputation as the premier Labor Day weekend regatta, staving off competition from other regattas such as “Son of PITCH.” Since 1995, BYC has joined with the Visiting Nurse Association to add a charitable component to the regatta, raising more than $50,000 each year for the local Hospice organization. In 1983, desiring to expand the range of activities, the BYC membership approved an Outstation Fund for the purpose of obtaining property in the San Juan Islands for use during cruises. The club leased Inati Bay on the east shore of Lummi Island for the use of members. The Inati Bay annual Commodore’s Picnic became an annual event. In 1988, the Outstation program was expanded and a lease for a BYC member slip at Friday Harbor was acquired. At year-end, this idea was dropped; in 1990, a slip was rented at Telegraph Harbor; this was also dropped at the end of 1990 because of lack of use. A landmark event occurred in 1988 when Bellingham’s Soviet Union sister city, Nakhodka, sent the 40-foot racing boat KAPITAN PANAEV (”Pin-eye-Ev”) to participate in local races and in the Swiftsure Classic. The visit resulted from a six-year negotiation by the sponsor, Bellingham Cold Storage, and a Whatcom County delegation. The boat and crew remained for six weeks. Unfortunately, the Soviet boat suffered damage in a collision during pre-Swiftsure maneuvering and could not participate in that race. It was a very successful visit, however. The crew of seven under Captain Victor Bukhalsky made many good friends and thoroughly enjoyed their time in Bellingham. During an emotional farewell, the Soviet crew unanimously vowed to return and invited a BYC boat to visit Nakhodka. In 1989, the reciprocal visit occurred when eight yachtsmen, 12 teenagers, and three counselors went to Nakhodka for three weeks of camping and racing. Then, in 1990, a group of youngsters from Nakhodka came here to the Four Winds Camp on Orcas Island, while adult sailors competed in an International Pacific Rim Invitational Regatta (PRIR) here on Puget Sound, organized by the BYC. The adults were from the USSR, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, and the U.S. The racing ended just in time for the Seattle 1990 Goodwill Games. In 1992, Commodore Dick Johnson led a team of Bellingham sailors to our Australian Sister City for a second running of the PRIR. Entries included Australia, Russia, Japan, Victoria BC, and Bellingham. The regatta has continued on a biannual basis since, with venues in Japan and New Zealand. Meanwhile, beginning under the leadership of Patricia Ambrose and Gary Baker in the mid-1980s, the Club’s Junior Sailing activities increased substantially. Now the program holds classes for hundreds of young people every summer, and BYC Juniors compete regionally and even nationally in races which show entries with the BYC burgee. For her work on this program, Pat Ambrose earned the prestigious “Tugboat Annie” award presented annually to an outstanding woman from throughout the Puget Sound region. To further support junior sailing, the Club purchased Optimist, Laser, and Byte sailboats in addition to the Holder Hawks already owned. The Youth Fleet also sponsors a major regatta. The Bellingham Bay One-Design Regatta is held each September since 1991. It attracts youth and adult sailors from throughout the Northwest and neighboring Canada for two days of intense competition. The Laser and Tasar classes have used the One-Design for regional championship competition, helping fill the Bay with more than 100 small sailboats. Two BYC families have been recognized as Northwest Boating Family of the Year by the Northwest Marine Trades Association. In 1995, the Ross Family, Steve, Meredith, Kelly, and Shannon, were so named in recognition of their work with and participation in junior sailing programs. In 1997, the Wells Family, Dick, Jeanette, and Tiffany, were recognized for their active participation in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Redirection: BYC has always provided good programs and exciting events for its members. For many years, it also maintained one of the finest dining facilities in Bellingham. The growth of the city, however, attracted many competitors for the dining facet of the Club. Members whose primary affiliation with BYC had been for dining purposes began to leave the Club, causing shortfalls in funds needed to maintain the restaurant operation. Faced with declining revenues from dues, increasing operational deficits from the dining operation, serious maintenance problems, and a line of credit that had grown to more than $200,000, the Board of Trustees was forced to close the dining operation in 1996. The upper-level restaurant space was leased to a private operator who is open to the public, while still providing special benefits for BYC and its members. Lease payments from the upper level are sufficient to repay the debt, pay the ground lease, and most of the taxes, insurance, and utilities associated with the building and Club operations. A dedicated group of members have remained with BYC and are working to return the Club to its roots: an organization dedicated to recreational boating and those who enjoy our company. BYC remains one of the finest private clubs in the Pacific Northwest, enjoying reciprocal privileges with most of the yacht clubs in the United States and Canada. The club has a roster of nearly 400 members and a registered fleet of approximately 200 boats. The club pennant - still the original Piper design - flies proudly over the clubhouse and on all those boats. BYC Webmaster Bellingham Yacht Club » Inati Bay Home | Email Webmaster Bellingham Yacht Club Inati Bay The Bellingham Yacht Club maintains a private outstation on Lummi Island named Inati Bay. The bay is aproximately 1 hour away by boat (faster for speedboats). The anchorage is well sheltered from the prevailing winds and provides a great place to cruise to for a quick weekend outing. Club volunteers clean the beach area, mow the grass, cut back the brush, and maintain two outhouses. As of June 30th 2005, the Bellingham Yacht Club has negotiated with the Lummi Island Land Company to allow unrestricted anchorage in Inati Bay. Anchorage users should be aware of the dispute in regard to the bedlands of Inati Bay between the Department of Natural Resources Aquatic Division (DNR), and the Lummi Island Land Company (LILC). The Bellingham Yacht Club makes no representation of ownership, and requests all parties concerned with this dispute contact the Department of Natural Resources, and the Lummi Island Land Co. The tidelands and uplands of Inati Bay remain under restricted access by authorized users of the Lummi Island Land Company. Members of the Bellingham Yacht Club are permitted access to the beach area under the terms of the BYC lease with the Lummi Island Land Company. Please respect the rights of the property owners. Turn to starboard around the rock breakwater, you will pass fish houses and a frozen food facility to port, with a large “ICE” sign atop them. Continue around to port, past the Gate 1 Fuel Dock. Continue back toward shore. As you near the shore, you will see the BYC dock parallel to the shore and directly in front of the BYC Clubhouse building (Club rooms are on the lower floor, with the restaurant above). Take any available slip not marked “reserved”. Keep your boat close to any boat ahead of, or behind it, to allow maximum use of the dock by all desirous of doing so. FACILITIES AND AMENITIES: The BYC offers visitors from reciprocal Yacht Clubs use of the BYC dock; the Club’s restrooms and showers; and participation in the Club’s Friday’s @ Five program. The dock is over 200 feet long (of which about 100ft is available to visitors from reciprocating clubs), new in 1997, constructed of the most modern materials. It includes numerous 30 and 20-amp outlets for 100-volts AC. The restroom and showers are accessible in the Club building when the Club is attended (BYC is an all volunteer club and is not continually manned), or by special arrangement with the Club’s Dockmaster or any other officer. Dock carts are at the head of the dock, as are Port of Bellingham-operated rest rooms, shower rooms, and a laundry. There is an ice machine near the dock; also nearby are numerous engine, electric, electronic, canvas, hydraulic, haul-out, and fuel facilities and services. Two chandleries are nearby as are several restaurants from casual to luxurious. Public phones are at the head of the dock, as is a weather radio receiver. Bellingham is a U.S. Customs check in port; the numbers are posted at the ramp’s head. A portable holding tank pump cart is in an enclosure right next to the BYC dock. An oil dump tank is about 300 feet away for waste oil disposal. Friday’s @ Five is a BYC social program held in the Clubhouse on the first and third Friday of each month. It is a social hour with refreshments, appetizers, and occasionally a short, informal program. Dress is casual. During the summer the club bar is normally open from 5.00 pm to 10.00 pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Reciprocal visitors are welcome. Contact a Club officer to confirm that it is scheduled. DOCK RULES AND REGULATIONS: The BYC Dock is available to reciprocal club members on a first-come, first serve basis; about 100 feet is available for reciprocal guest use. Low water depth is over seven feet, and the largest boat accommodated by the fairway’s turning channel to the dock is about 65 feet. The first night’s moorage is free; thereafter, the moorage is 50 cents/foot/night. Power on the dock is $3.00 per day for each day used. Moorage is limited to three days except by special arrangement. The dock is a side-tie, parallel dock. Users should tie up as close as possible to the boat(s) in front and behind to maximize the number of boats served. BYC reserves the right to adjust dock lines and/or refuse or grant moorage at it’s sole discretion on this dock to offer the most boats moorage, and to facilitate Club use of the dock for any purpose. NOTE: DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS, PARTICULARLY JULY AND AUGUST THE DOCK FILLS EARLY. BYC DOES NOT GUARANTEE MOORAGE. IF BYC MOORAGE IS NOT AVAILABLE TRY THE ADJACENT PUBLIC DOCK (CHARGES 50 CENTS/FT/NIGHT). Upon arrival boaters should collect a BYC registration form/envelope from the small wooden box at the east end of the dock. The information should be completed, and the envelope stub should be posted on a window of the vessel clearly visible from the dock. Prior to departure the envelope containing cash or check should be deposited in the BYC box on the Club (basement) doorway. If the skipper’s club does not have reciprocal privileges, the skipper will be asked to move the boat from the BYC dock. Visitors are required to: (A) Return dock carts promptly after use; (B) Honor the “no sewage discharge” policy of the Port of Bellingham and USCG; Take all garbage to the dumpsters located across from BYC Club house; (D) Do no cooking and/or have no fires on the docks themselves; (E) Keep lines and cords coiled and stowed so as to minimize their hazard; (E) Display the BYC registration-envelope stub in the boats window dockside; and (F) Fly their club’s burgee. Bellingham Yacht Club » Junior Sailing Home | Email Webmaster Bellingham Yacht Club Junior Sailing Overview The Junior Sailing Program of the Bellingham Yacht Club offers a safe and fun opportunity for young people ages 8-18 to learn to sail. Basic and Intermediate Sailing courses offered each Summer teach the skills needed to safely and confidently handle a sailing dinghy like the Optimist or Byte on the waters of Bellingham Bay. Our coaches are certified Sailing Instructors. Student fees also include an annual membership in the Junior Sailing Club, so the fun doesn’t stop when the course is over! The year-round Junior Sailing Club provides fun activities that are often planned by the Junior members themselves - activities like day sailing, skill-building on-the-water games, field trips, game-night, occasional cruises on bigger boats, as well as participation in the weekly racing series and regional Northwest Youth Racing Circuit regattas, where we race against some of the best young sailors in the country. Strong parent support is what makes the Junior Sailing Club a success. Why learn to sail? Sailing is fun! Depending upon your inclination, a day sailing can be anything from a relaxing time out on the water, to a snarling roller-coaster ride that would challenge an Olympic athlete. It’s a matter of how far you want to push yourself. Sailing is easy and enjoyable for beginners, but takes a lifetime to master. It’s a brain-game: using only the wind, your knowledge and some high-tech equipment, you make your boat go - and go fast! Every day is different. The weather is constantly changing, so the combination of wind, waves and current will always present a new challenge. The more you learn about the factors involved, the more enjoyable the sport becomes. Best of all, when you’re sailing, you get to visit some of the most beautiful places on Earth - places that other people only get to see in pictures! BYC Webmaster Bellingham Yacht Club » Membership Info Home | Email Webmaster Bellingham Yacht Club Membership Info Who We Are: The Bellingham Yacht Club is made up of a variety of people from all around Bellingham and beyond who love boats and/or boating. In fact, it’s likely that you know many of us already. We’re people who enjoy the company of others and like to share good times. Through our programs and sponsorship of periodic local events open to everyone, the Bellingham Yacht Club serves our community. By hosting regional, national, and international boating regattas, we help showcase our city and county to others world-wide. While the focus of the Club is on recreational boating activities, we have many social activities which appeal to boaters and non-boaters alike. Owning a boat is not a membership requirement at the Bellingham Yacht Club. All you need to belong is a desire to have fun and get acquainted… it s that easy! A Well Financed and Organized Club! The BYC is a membership association incorporated in Washington. Governance includes the Club s Officers and a Board of Trustees elected by the membership. All Club activities are run by volunteers (except our Junior Sailing coaches) and by committees appointed annually. We own the large waterfront clubhouse, and substantial equipment including a junior sailboat fleet and several “mark boats” for racing and cruising events. We have substantial income from the rental of part of our building to a large catering company which has allowed us to dramatically increase our net worth in recent years, as the building mortgage our only borrowing gets paid down long before due. Many BYC members believe that soon, our success will dictate a substantial initiation fee so that new members “pay their share”, another reason to join now! Boating Activities: Adult sailors participate in a variety of over 45 races from spring thru fall including Wednesday Night Racing, Around the County Race, Whidbey I. Race Week, and the regionally known P.I.T.C.H. Regatta. The Power and Sail Fleets offer boaters a regular schedule of cruises around the local area including the San Juans and Canadian Gulf Islands, and even as far as Alaska, Desolation Sound, and beautiful Princess Louisa Inlet. Inati Bay on Lummi Island is the Bellingham Yacht Club Outstation where members can relax in a beautiful setting just a short trip away. Boaters join in the annual Christmas Lighted Boat Parade and Opening Day for fun, prizes, and to entertain the city. BYC’s Junior Sailing Fleet teaches sailing skills to youngsters, and helps them polish these new skills in junior racing programs. One of the highlights is the very competitive One-Design Regatta in September with boats from all over Puget Sound. We have a 200-foot guest dock located immediately in front of the Yacht Club. We are able to provide day moorage at no cost to the members, and have limited space for members who do not have permanent moorage in the harbor. Members have reciprocity privileges with yacht clubs around Puget Sound, BC, and most other places around the world. Show your BYC card and use their facilities! Social Activities: The newly-redecorated Portside Lounge is a private, volunteer-staffed facility serving legal beverages and light snacks for Members only. The formal/semi-formal Commodore’s Ball is our annual dinner- dance honoring the incoming commodore. Opening Day celebrates the beginning of summer with a wonderful party, blessing of the fleet, a “parade of boats” and more! Evening programs, speakers, and videos on a variety of topics are scheduled. Fridays at Five events are twice/month social gatherings for members to meet and chat in a convivial atmosphere, with refreshments and an informal program. Our Ward and Commodores Rooms for private functions are available to members at no charge for business or social events. Other Advantages of BYC Membership: The Jib Sheet, our monthly newsletter, keeps members informed of Club news, activities, and special events. The BYC Yearbook and Roster is a comprehensive guide published annually with members, vessels and more. Non-boater Members enjoy reciprocal social privileges at other clubs, too! How to Join: Download the PDF form , print it out, and fill it in and mail it in. Better yet bring the form to the club on a Fridays at Five, meet a few people, and turn it in at the bar.
