First Chance: 'Boat on the Lawn' Wednesday, May 31st, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., HUB Lawn UW campus Second chance: 'Boat at the IMA' Thursday, June 1st, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in front of the UW IMA building Third chance: WYC 'Info night,' Thursday, June 1st, 7 p.m. (location T.B.A.). After these three events, signups will begin online on the club's Lessons webpage (Probably the following Monday, June 5th). Do keep in mind that lessons fill up VERY fast this time of year, so try to snag a spot in the lesson of your choice ASAP! Also, don't be afraid of the waiting lists. Some people almost always drop or can't make it to class, so waitlisted students are often welcomed into many of our lessons. Summer Quarter WYC class offerings should be posted to the WEB before 'BOTL,' 'BATIMA,' and Info Night. Keep an eye out for new postings to see if you can find that perfect time slot to fit into your schedule. Novice (Beginner) Lessons are typically taught in three different kinds of boats: Hobie Bravo (1-2 person, VERY stable), SH (Singlehanded - 1 person, typically a Laser) and DH (doublehanded - 2 person, usually 'Flying Juniors' or Laser II's) boats. The sailing is the same no matter what boat you choose...the only differences are the way the boats are put together. Novice Classes focus much on WYC club policy, procedure, and basic sailing technique. Usually, one lesson should be sufficient for you to learn about these things. After that lesson, just get out there and practice! You DO NOT Have to take a separate lesson to learn how to sail the other (SH or DH) kind of boat! The club offers many opportunities for you to learn how to rig different boats and get out there to practice w/o having to enroll in that boat s specific lesson. If you're new to this stuff or the club, check out this website for more information: Welcome to the WYC Man Overboard Clinic The Washington Yacht Club will host a 'Man Overboard Clinic' with the help of the Seattle Women's Sailing Association on Saturday, August 19th, 2006. The clinic will consist of both classroom and 'on the boat' teaching & experiencing sessions focusing solely on keelboat MOB recovery techniques. Special guest divers will be the practice victims, so don't worry, you won't HAVE to go in the water! The clinic will held over the course of a full day, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., with lunch provided. Cost is free for current WYC club members, and $10 for SWSA members. Attendees are welcome to sign up to have their own boat used for demonstrations/practice, and EVERYONE is encouraged to bring their full foul-weather gear and life vests. You will have the opportunity to get in the water and see just what it feels like to be 'swimming' in all your gear (and test out inflatable vests if you have them!). The clinic will be held at the University of Washington's Waterfront Activities Center. Singups will begin online sometime this month (May, 2006). Stay tuned for more details! Work Parties are Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:30 at the Waterfront Activities Center. All skill levels are welcome. You can moor a vessel at low or no cost at many private and public marinas from South Puget Sound to mid Vancouver Island, British Columbia. When exercising reciprocal moorage privileges, please follow the guidelines below: You must be a current member of WYC to exercise reciprocal moorage. If you are on a club keelboat and therefore left your membership card in the sail locker, bring some photo ID and a copy of your WYC membership card. You must fly a WYC burgee. Burgees are available for purchase from the Program Director at the HUB office during regular office hours. Register your boat at the marina office. Yes you still have to fill out the paperwork, even when you aren't paying. Be respectful of others. You are a guest on somebody's private waterfront property, purchased or leased at great expense. Being loud, littering, or not following marina rules will create problems for the yacht club you are visiting, and they will revoke our mooring privileges. Most of these clubs have links to their web sites on their respective WYC pages. It is recommended that you use the links to obtain current contact information to take with you on your trip. Reciprocal moorage agreements and web pages are maintained by the Reciprocal Moorage $ ( mauricef@microsoft.com ) person. WYCoffers a wide variety of sailing lessons for our members, from novice toskipper. We also offer teaching opportunities. Unless otherwise noted, all classes are open to all members. Noexperience is necessary, we are here to teach you! We supply the boats too. Some classes do require you to read and be familiar with the DaySailing handbook, that blue book you got with your membership card. Some classes also require you to pass the Novice Written Test, see below. Novice Written Test A novice single handed or double handed rating requires passing both apractical (on the water) and written test. Passing the novice written testis a prerequisite for some classes. You can make arrangements to take the test at the club officeduring office hours, or at the WAC during Ratings Examiner or Chiefs hours (look for hours posted on the WAC sail locker door). Thewritten test only covers material in the Day Sailing handbook, which includes sailing concepts in general andour specific club rules. More than one experienced sailor has failed the novicewritten test the first time because they didn't familiarize themselves with theclub rules before taking the test! Each fleet of boat has its own set of ratings. Ratings from one fleet do not transfer to another class of boat. Novice, intermediate, and skipper levels ratings allow members to sail in progressively more wind as well as farther from the club. There are also a number of written tests that are required to earnratings. The minimum ratings foreach boat is listed in the boats page. Additional information can be found in the Daysailor Handbook or the club By-Laws. How To Get a Rating To receive a rating, a member must pass appropriate written tests as well assailing skills tests. Written tests can be taken in the club officeduring regular office hours , or at the WAC during ratings examiner hours . Any chief can also administer a written test when they are at the WAC, or by appointment. Weekly novice instructors will usually administer the novice written test as a part of their class. Sailing skills tests are administered by an instructor as a part of alesson, or at the WAC during ratings examiner hours . WYC chiefs can also administer skills tests when they are at the WAC, or by appointment. Common Ratings Requirements Here are the specific requirements to earn the more popular ratings at WYC. Note that most ratings above novice are awarded by a chief when the wind conditions are of appropriate strength. Novice Single-Handed: To get a novice single-handed rating you must complete thenovice written test and a practical test on the water. During the practical testyou will be asked to rig the boat correctly from memory - you will be rigging a laser, so don'tforget the cunningham demonstrate proper boat checkout procedures demonstrate good boat handling - usually 4 tacks in a row and then 4 jibes demonstrate a man-overboard drill - this involves recovering a PFD usingthe proper technique described in the DaySailor handbook, (approach the man-overboard onyour windward side sailing upwind and stop when you get there) demonstrate proper docking demonstrate a wet capsize - yes you will get wet! You must capsize the boatand get in the water and then right in the proper manner. This can often be donenear the dock. correctly de-rig the boat Intermediate Single-handed: This practical is the same as the novice but must be done inabout 10 knots of steady wind . In this wind you must demonstrate excellentboat handling skills. This will usually involve sailing around a small course, demonstrating skilled tacks and jibes and demonstrating good sail trim andhiking. In addition the wet capsize will not be performed near the dock so beprepared and dress accordingly! You will probably be sailing wet for at least 10minutes. Skipper Single-handed: To obtain a skipper rating you must first pass the skipperwritten test . It's best to take this test at the office , but it may be taken at the WAC during ratings examiner hours or with a chief. The skipper practical test contains all the requirements ofthe novice practical test with a few additions. The skipper test must beperformed in over 15 knots of steady wind . In this wind you mustdemonstrate excellent boat handling skills. You will likely be asked to sailaround a course, do fast and skilled tacks and jibes, stop the boat, do a manoverboard and other skill demonstrations. In addition you will need tocompletely turtle the boat and then recover. The skipper test is usually done at Webster Point or on Lake Washington. This means you will probably besailing for at least a half an hour wet. Please be prepared physically andmentally and dress appropriately. Double-handed Ratings Double handed ratings have the same requirements assingle-handed but are performed on a FJ or Laser II with crew. The crew need notbe a member or getting a rating, but must have sufficient sailing skill. You theskipper will drive the boat and perform maneuvers. The most important part ofdouble-handed sailing is good communication, so you will be asked to saycommands loud enough for the examiner to hear them. A wet capsize will be required and theskipper will right the boat while the crew rolls into the cockpit. Be sure totell your crew they will be getting wet and need a change of clothes! That is why we have the chief system. Chiefs are experienced club members and instructors who will take the time to verify your experience and issue you a rating on the spot. Remember, chiefs are not out to fail members - chiefs are happy to supply any special rigging instructions necessary to sail a boat. Additionally a chief at the WAC can issue out "temporary" ratings and therefore sign members out in conditions where they normally wouldn't be allowed to sail, which is a great way to get more practice time on the water before taking a test to get your next rating. Most club chiefs hold hours by appointment, or they simply announce on the WYC info list that they will be at the WAC. But one chief, designated the club Ratings Examiner, holds regular hours at the WAC to help members get ratings. Chief/Ratings Examiner/Open Sailing Hours Date Time Chief Comments Sorry, no hours are available in the near future Club Chiefs All chiefs are qualified to give out all SH and DH dinghy ratings. Some chiefs can give out additional classes of ratings. WYC provides many ways to get out on the water. But first you have to stop reading the web and get down to the water! For members who know nothing about sailing, we offer a comprehensive lessons program. We will teach you how to sail, and soon you will be sailing our boats unsupervised, with confidence. For members who know a thing or two about sailing, our chiefs program allows members to demonstrate skills in front of experienced club members and test out of lessons. It's a quick and easy way to earn a rating, and get permission to sail our boats unsupervised. You can also take the written tests during office hours in the HUB. For members working towards a rating and needing some practice before taking the test, look for ratings examiner hours or chief's hours which are frequently posted on the calendar, web, and/or on one of the WYC e-mail lists . These hours are for members to practice sailing or take tests. If you can't make those hours, e-mail one of the active chiefs and set up a time for supervised sailing or test taking. Club cruises and "crew wanted" requests are usually announced on the WYC email list . Join the wyc list and stay informed. And finally, once a quarter (except winter quarter) the club organizes a large flotilla and sails to Blake Island for an overnight cruise. Read about the Snooze n Cruise here .
