AMSTERDAM (IJmuiden, Velsen and Beverwijk) The port of Amsterdam is situated on the west coast of The Netherlands in Western Europe, flanked by other ports such as Antwerp and Rotterdam in the south and Hamburg and Bremen in the north. It links the rest of the world with the European Common market. The port The Port of Amsterdam is accessible to vessels with a max draft of 137 dm.s.w. and a max beam of 45 m. IJmuiden is accessible with a maximum draft of 165 dm. For all vessels with a draft of over 131 dm. and a beam exceeding 42 m. a special permission has to be obtained from the Government Harbour Master at IJmuiden. Should the beam exceed 42 m. restrictions will apply with regard to the maximum permitted draft. The IJmuiden locks give access to the Amsterdam port area via the North Sea Canal. The largest of the three locks is the Northern lock with a length of 400 metres, an extreme width of 50 metres and a depth of 15 metres. The North Sea Canal between the locks at IJmuiden and the Amsterdam Port Area, has a length of 11 miles and a width of 270 metres with a bottom width of 170 metres at a depth of about 150 dm. The port offers all necessary facilities, such as very modern equipped plants for general as well as for bulk cargoes and containers, excellent shipyards for dry-docking, maintenance, repairs and facilities for cruise vessels.
