Kvaerner Masa-Yards Inc. is a Finnish shipbuilding company specialised in designing and building advanced cruise ships, passenger-car ferries and other technically demanding vessels. Kvaerner Masa-Yards builds luxury cruise ships and passenger ships. In this market segment Kvaerner Masa-Yards has a strong position. Over 25% of the world's cruise ships have come from the company's two shipyards during the last ten years. These types of ships have been built by Kvaerner Masa-Yards' shipyards for more than 30 years. Kvaerner Masa-Yards has a wide experience in designing and building ice-going vessels, liquefied gas carriers, special oil tankers and cable ships, as well as sophisticated ships and units for the offshore oil industry, such as Floating Storage Units, Floating Production Ships (hull) and special duty supply vessels. Kvaerner Masa-Yards is owned by Aker Kvaerner ASA and is part of the Aker Kvaerner Yards Group of shipyards. Kvaerner Masa-Yards operates two highly modern newbuilding yards. The shipyards are structured to handle technically advanced ships requiring innovative design and production technologies and R&D input. Kvaerner Masa-Yards Turku Shipyard established 1737 Newbuilding dock: 365 x 80 x 10 m Personnel: 2,200 Kvaerner Masa-Yards Helsinki Shipyard established 1865 Covered newbuilding dock: 280.5 x 34 x 9.5 m (Panamax dimensions) Personnel: 2,000 Piikkio Works Oy, a separate company under Kvaerner Masa-Yards Inc., produces ready-to-install modular cabins and bathroom units for ships, offshore platforms and hotels. Piikkio Works employs approx. 300 people and is located at Piikkio and Paimio, near the town of Turku. Kvaerner Masa-Yards Technology and Kvaerner Masa Marine are separate business units that offer customers marine related services, such as ship design, consulting engineering and R&D, for a wide range of ship types and maritime projects. The activities of Kvaerner Masa-Yards Technology, based in Finland, include R&D, ship design, ship production technology and technology transfer within the sectors of marine leisure, transport systems, LNG carrier technology and arctic technology and operation. Kvaerner Masa Marine with offices in Vancouver B.C., Canada, and in Annapolis, Maryland, USA, are engaged in consulting engineering in the field of naval architecture and marine engineering. Special Technology ships Kvaerner Masa-Yards is also an experienced builder of LNG carriers, cable ships, icebreakers and ice-going tonnage and all types of special technology vessels, such as advanced tankers, research vessels and vessels for the offshore oil and gas industry. Cabins Piikkio Works Oy, a separate company under Kvaerner Masa-Yards Inc., produces ready-to-install modular cabins and bathroom units for ships, offshore platforms and hotels. Prefabricated modular construction means quicker completion and lower capital expenditure for the customer. Marine Engineering Services Kvaerner Masa-Yards Technology (in Finland) and Kvaerner Masa Marine (in USA, Canada) are separate business units that offer customers marine related services, such as ship design, consulting engineering and R&D, for a wide range of ship types and maritime projects. Advanced ships from modern shipyards Kvaerner Masa-Yards operates two highly modern newbuilding yards in Turku and Helsinki. A recently completed USD 300 million investment programme means that the company's two yards are among the most modern and efficient in the industry. Cruise ships Kvaerner Masa-Yards' shipyards develop and build luxury cruise ships and cruise ferries. Over the years, some 70 ships of these types have been designed and built. Special Technology ships Kvaerner Masa-Yards is also an experienced builder of LNG carriers, cable ships, icebreakers and ice-going tonnage and all types of special technology vessels, such as advanced tankers, research vessels and vessels for the offshore oil and gas industry. The activities at both the Turku shipyard and the Helsinki shipyard are audited by Lloyd's Register of Shipping, under the ISO 9001 certificate. Kvaerner Masa-Yards Turku The Turku shipyard is today one of the largest in Europe. It is also among the most modern, due to several investment and development programmes over the years. Shipbuilding in the Turku area dates back to 1737. The Turku yard was moved to its present location in 1974. The dimensions of the newbuilding dock are 365 x 80 x 10 metres and it is equipped with a gantry crane capable of lifting 600 tonnes. A recent large investment programme at the yard included increased automation of the steel production line and new indoor production facilities including halls for steel production and block assembly. Kvaerner Masa-Yards Helsinki Production at the modern Helsinki shipyard is carried out indoors. The 280 x 34 x 9.5 metres covered newbuilding dock allows the construction of full-sized Panamax vessels. The shipyard in Helsinki was established in 1865. Through continuous investments in the rationalisation of production, the yard is highly advanced. Recent investments include a new block assembly and outfitting hall, an enlargement of the steel panel fabrication workshop with a new highly modern production line, a new paintshop, and increasing the lifting height and lifting capacity, to 450 tonnes, in the covered newbuilding dock.
