Products Electro-Inclinometer Systems Introducing a new angle on List control An inertial sensor mounted inside the list control enclosure can detect movement of 1/4 of 1 degree. Supplementary audio alarms signify unsafe conditions. -Facilitates ballasting operations -Greater control while transferring loads -Promotes safer shipping and helps to prevent structural damage of your ship. Canal puts you in greater control The Electro-Inclinometer surpasses standards set by most list meters by incorporating an inertial so accurate, it detects movement of 1/4 of 1 degree. With the installation of this compact unit, Canal's Electro-Inclinometer provides a wealth of information to keep your ship on even keel. In addition to facilitating trim, ballasting and load transfer operations, Canal's Electro-Inclinometer can be used for safety interlock in many different applications; -Drilling platforms to interlock jack-up legs and ballast to prevent excessive listing and ensure upright positioning of the drill tower. -Cargo or tanker vessels for interlocking cargo cranes, ballast and cargo pumps. -Self-unloading vessels to interlock boom and cargo conveyor belts while unloading and pumping. Canal is proud of their engineering achievements Electrically Speaking on Hull 79 By: Pete Riganelli, Canal Marine Electrical Forman While Port Weller Dry Docks busily assembles a "forebody" for the Hull 79 project, the electricians at Canal Marine prepare to `bring it to life'. Lighting, solenoid valves, motors and cameras are just a few of the items Canal is responsible for. In all, 14 cameras will monitor the unloading process with 10 of these cameras located in the center tunnels focused on the conveyors. Also, in the center tunnels are 20 cast iron explosion proof boxes which house the P.L.C. s (Programmable Logic Controller). The P.L.C is responsible for such things as controlling the opening and closing of any one of the 146 hydraulic gates, switching any one of the 74 vibrators on and off; determining how much each gate is opened and monitoring how much cargo is on the belt at any one time. These are just some of the tasks performed by the P L.C. via a computer in the unloading control room. Although the forebody is 740 feet, over 6500 feet of cable will be installed just to power the 1000 kilowatt bow thruster motor (9 runs of 750 MCM). This doesn't include the thousands of feet of cable required to connect all the other various electrical devices. So, where do you put all this cable? On some of the 3500 feet of cable tray mounted in the center and side tunnels. Approximately 130 fluorescent light fixtures will provide plenty of light in a usually dusty tunnel environ ment. But not all of our work at P.W.D.D. is on the new hull. Several electricians are in the process of preparing the aft end of the "Desmarais" to meet its new mate. Stripping out redundant cables and installing new ones, re-lighting the loop belt and upgrad ing the existing M.C.C. (Motor Control Center) are just a few of the tasks at hand. At Canal Marine's shop a new unloading console and a new ballast console are also being assembled. The main focus of our work has been the installation of cables from the aft end to the forward end. Although these cable runs cannot be completed without the transition piece in place, they are coiled and readied for the final pull when the aft end and new forebody are attached. Currently, there are 22 electricians working for Canal Marine at P.W.D.D., 17 on day shift and 5 on afternoons. General Foreman Don Bryson, along with some Dry Dock veterans such as Wayne Gordon, Dan Hallas, Clay Cloutier and Walter Marzec, to name a few, have combined their skills with some new faces and fresh ideas to install the myriad of cables and new equipment. PREVIOUS PROJECTS Important role for Canal at Copps Coliseum project Talk to anyone in the building industry and they'll tell you that while times have improved since the depths of the recession, big jobs are difficult to land. Sharp minds and sharp pencils are needed when job bids are calculated and tenders are prepared. Both qualities have been in evidence at Canal Contractors which has been retained for at least three major projects since 1983. These include Chrysler Canada's new Windsor van plant, Kellogg's new automated cereal mixing system in London and, most recently, the new $42.8-million Victor Kennedy Copps Coliseum in downtown Hamilton. Canal was the choice for the $3 million electrical contract at Copps Coliseum, which many expect to become the home for a National Hockey League franchise within three years. The facility will also be used for trade shows and large conventions. Naturally, contracts such as these are the envy of the contracting in dustry. However, on site technical expertise is not the only factor in securing such work. A keen sense of project costing is critical. "It's a very competitive marketplace," notes Canal President Don Forgeron. "Bidding for work in an atmosphere like this poses quite a challenge." Meeting deadlines is always important but the Hamilton job had a unique wrinkle. The first event in the new facility will be the World Junior Hockey Championships. The City of Hamilton posted a $250,000 bond against its facility being ready for the event so it was crucial that supply and installation of the main power and service to the 18,000 seat building be on schedule. It is - and more than 100 miles of wire, 22 miles of electrical conduit and 3,600 light fixtures are now encased in the facility, with the international hockey tournament still weeks away. Naturally, the focus will be on the hockey players between Christmas and New Year's when the big games are played. However, long before hockey crowds could gather to watch 'powerhouse' teams from around the world, it took the Canal team and its talents to provide the real electricity. Canal's self-unloading system This fully-automated self-unloading system, designed by Canal Contractors, is one of a possible four systems to be installed in a 15,000-ton barge for the Korean Power Commission to transfer coal to thermal generating plants. Canal has exported several similar systems to Korea, Norway and Japan. Witnessing the demonstration are, left to right, Don Pordham, site superintendent for Stephens-Adamson, Yu Hwan Kim of Hyundai in Korea, Don Forgeron of Canal Electric, Tom Turner, a Canal electrician, Erwin Be lau, a Canal electronics engineer, Frank Sun, a Canal electronics engineer, Casey Opdam, vice-president of Canal and John Elder, sales manager of Stephens-Adamson.
