Sovcomflot was established in 1973, and since then its managers have provided for the financing and construction of hundreds of new ships. As a State-owned Company Sovcomflot participates in the Programme of Revival of the Merchant Marine of Russia and implements the renovation programme of its own. The average age of the Sovcomflot fleet is 10 years, thus meeting the requirements of all major ports and classification societies, which is achieved by purchasing and constructing new vessels. Since 1990 the age of Sovcomflot vessels dropped down by 15% and the tonnage has increased from 1.8 mln. tons up to 3.3 mln. tons. Sovcomflot is diversifying its business activities, yet all of them remain strictly shipping. Commercial efficiency of the Company was based on the experience in sale and purchase of second-hand vessels, building and buying of new ships. Besides, Sovcomflot is working in the world freight market putting vessels on spot, voyage or bareboat charter. In other words Sovcomflot today is making use of all the instruments of the world shipping business, one of them being the Company's image.
