Grandi was established in November 1985 through the merger of Reykjavik Municipal Trawler Company and a private fish processing company, Isbjorninn. In September 1990 another Reykjavik freezing plant, Hradfrystistodin, merged into Grandi. Iceland s fisheries sector has advanced by leaps and bounds since Grandi was founded. Grandi has been a leader in deploying high-tech applications for fishing and processing, and in ongoing product development. Its mission is to create high-value, high-quality products from the best raw material available. An average of 250 employees work for the company, on land and at sea. Fishing and fish processing Grandi operates six boats, comprising three freezer trawlers, two wetfish trawlers and a purse seiner. Catches are processed on board the freezer trawlers, either as finished products for the market or for secondary processing on land. Grandi operates a plant in Reykjavik which concentrates on specialist processing of a number of species. The company aims to maximize product value by focusing its trawlers fishing effort on certain species and by developing products for retail packaging.
