New at the Cayman Island Port Authority New Port Manager Computer System - (June 1, 2002) Port Authority switched over to a new computer software system. Development started in 1996 between Klein Systems Group and the Port Authority. June 1, 2002, was the change over date for the entire port. Many years of development has gone into this project and has developed a state of the art one of a kind system for the Caribbean region. Port Manager consists of many modules: Harbour Master Container Tracking Cargo Tracking/Delivery/Inventory Accounts Receivables/Billing Accounts Payable General Ledger Statistics (still in development) Hand Held System Vessel Security System Both, customers and port employees are pleased with the system and the accuracy that the port now has on tracking containers & cargo. The most recent addition has been self service kiosks that allow customers to see if their cargo is unloaded and ready for pickup. There are more improvements to the system planned for the future including web features and digital signature capture devices to reduce the amount of paper used in the warehouse. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brac Dock Rebuild - (June, 2002) After the Cayman Brac dock received major damage, the Port Authority contracted Misener Marine from Tampa, Florida to rebuild the dock. This project started June, 2002, and finished February, 2003. The demolished old dock was used as a break water. Misener Marine contracted local firms and hired many local people to assist in the construction of the new dock. Click here to see more images "In early November 2001 the Cayman Brac Dock was severely damaged by Hurricane "Michelle". After a proper survey and assessment was done, the Port Authority decided to repair the dock. Misener Marine Construction Company Ltd. of Tampa, Florida who incidentally built the original dock in 1981, was awarded the contract to do the work. The work commenced in July 2002, with a scheduled completion date of November 30, 2002. Once again weather delayed the completion date with the passing of three Tropical Systems and a heavy Northweaster in mid November that damaged a portion of the dock undergoing repairs. The completion date had to be moved forward to early 2003, and the work was finally completed on February 2003. The dock has not only been repaired, but it has also been upgraded with the use of new Construction technology. For one, the rated surface-bearing load is now much greater than that of the previous surface. This translates into a much stronger overall structure. Also, a new fendering system has been installed and new lights added on the dock. The present dock should serve the needs of Cayman Brac for many years in the future, and ensure the economic advancement of the Island."
